Sends out a Magnitude 8 when you least expect it.

Bestiary entry (PS)

The Oceanus, also called Latimeria or Latimeri, is an enemy in Final Fantasy VI fought in the forests near South Figaro in the World of Ruin. The Oceanus uses Magnitude 8 often, but otherwise uses only normal attacks and its special attack, Corkscrew. Thundara is highly effective against it.

A single Oceanus can pincer attack the player's party in early versions of the game. Almost all monster formations for single enemies have the pincer attacks disabled, or have a forced front, back, or side attack, but Oceanus was one of the two enemies who slipped through, resulting in a pincer attack glitch. This bug was fixed for the European Game Boy Advance release.

Etymology[]

In Greek mythology, Oceanus (Ὠκεανός, Ōkeanós) was the Titan son of Uranus and Gaia. He was the father of the river gods and Oceanids, and believed by the ancient Greeks and Romans to be the divine personification of the ocean, depicted as an enormous river encircling the world. He has on occasion been depicted as having the lower body of a serpent.

The enemy's SNES name was Latimeria. Latimeria is a rare genus of fish that includes two extant species: the West Indian Ocean and Indonesian coelacanths. They follow the oldest known living lineage of Sarcopterygii (lobe-finned fish and tetrapods).
