I wish to see him in his glory as the one true ruler of Ardra.

Oberon Heindler

Oberon Heindler is a character of War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and makes his debut in the game's second season as the king of Heindler. He is also known as the Fanatical Dragon King due to his reverence of Jayden Rundall.

Oberon had once been held hostage in Lykeros Castle alongside Jayden. Having been subjected to abuse, he has tried to end his own life numerous times, but was saved by Jayden. Now a king, Oberon has pledged his country's allegiance to Rundall and assists them in the war against Ovis, doing everything in his power to see his savior's goals fulfilled.

Oberon serves as the secondary, albeit unintentional antagonist of season two, as his deteriorating state propels him to more active and hostile actions.

History[]

Oberon was the heir apparent to the kingdom of Heindler, along with his sister, Alaya Rundall. The two were acquainted with Rundall's heir, Jayden Rundall, and childhood friends. Around four years ago, Oberon's homeland, as well as Rundall, were vanquished and conquered by the kingdom of Lykeros, and he, along with Heindler general Gernsback and Jayden, were captured and held as prisoners. The ensuing captivity was tormenting to all of them, with Oberon likening the experience to "being sentenced to hell itself". Oberon was frequently brought before the Lykeros's nobles to be subjected to ridicule and humiliation for their amusement. King Lykeros held Oberon as a favorite target of his to torment, using Oberon to satisfy his own "sordid needs" (other languages make this reference to sexual abuse more explicit). The experience left Oberon mentally scarred to the point of developing suicidal urges, but he was unable to fully commit to it, along with Jayden and Gernsback offering him comfort, allowing him to endure his agony.

In due time, the forces of Rundall staged a revolt after purchasing guns from the Arms Dealer's Guild now led by Garvall. Jayden broke out of his cell and killed the guards with a gun he had procured in secret, liberating Oberon who was stunned by fear and unable to act, fearing the reprisal he would suffer were the revolt to fail. Jayden held him and took him outside his cell, massacring the Lykeros nobility present at the castle along King Lykeros, executing every last one of their tormentors. This left Oberon awestruck at Jayden's ability, which developed into fanatical idolatry towards his savior. Oberon took over his duties as the new king of Heindler, pledging his forces in support of Jayden's plans to unify all of Ardra much to the internal repulsion and rejection of nearly all his vassals, who viewed the alliance as an unequal one in which Jayden sought to take advantage of Oberon. The majority of Heindler embraced their national pride and secretly wished for a chance to strike at Rundall.

At some point in his life, still hurt over his horrible experience, Oberon met Lucielle Ovis, princess of the Kingdom of Ovis, and the two fell in love. As a means to be with his love and bolster Jayden's plans for unification, Oberon sought Lucielle's hand in marriage to join all three kingdoms. Jayden opposed the marriage, believing Ovis had ulterior motives and sought to use Oberon as a means to protect themselves from Rundall. Jayden declared war on Ovis and had Oberon support him in his quest to acquire the Vision Summoning Ring from Lucielle's possession. The war fractured Oberon, who was split between his love and the man whom he pledged his loyalty. Ultimately, Oberon sided with Jayden, albeit reluctantly.

Characteristics[]

Appearance[]

Oberon is a fair-skinned young man with curly brown hair. He dons a suit of purple armor with the symbol of Heindler, the dragon, on his chestplate. His epaulets have sharp wing-like segments and he dons a purplish cape with a white, scale-patterned underneath. The sides of his armor feature a foot-length skirted section, showing different patterns and reaching a red-colored segment before ending in black spikes. From his abdominal section hangs a piece of white fabric, covering parts of his white, scale-patterned trousers that merge with his purple plated boots.

His weapon of choice is a scythe-like spear. At the top of the shaft, a magenta section in the form of a stylized dragon's head leads into the spear's dark purple colored top, which is adorned by a red flame-like symbol, as well as two magenta, wing-like protrusions, giving it a scythe-like appearance. The upper tips of those protrusions are sharp blades of the same metallic material as the large blade at the tip of the spear.

Personality[]

Oberon is fanatically devoted to Jayden, the person who saved his life. He shows childish excitement when in his presence and addresses him in a more formal manner despite both being kings. Oberon's idolization of Jayden is known among his men, often seen offering exaggerated praise for his savior, believing him the only person fit to unify all of Ardra and that Jayden's thoughts exceed human understanding.

The reason for this idolization lies in Oberon's terrifying experience as a hostage of Lykeros. His treatment no better than that of a slave, Oberon attempted suicide on numerous occasions. Jayden, remaining composed and serving as a voice of reason, was the one who saved him, ultimately single-handedly wiping out the Lykeros royal family–the source of Oberon's suffering.

Young and naive, Oberon behaves unlike what is expected of a person of his position, being subservient to Jayden and his goals, and oblivious to the inner discord and turmoil among his men as a result of his devotion, and how they—in fact—despise being allied with Rundall. Oberon fails to fulfill his duties as a king to his people, neither guiding his nation nor looking at its best interests. Rather, he takes it on a self-serving adventure without considering how many his men are dying for what is purely to Rundall's benefit.

For Oberon, Jayden's goals take precedence and he is willing to allow his fiancee, Lucielle Ovis, get injured or even killed if necessary to achieve his goals. At Jayden's behest, Oberon takes the offensive against Ovis himself with deadly siege artillery. He feels torn inside and shows hesitation at the idea of Lucielle getting hurt, but ultimately denies any personal accountability and takes the easy way out by instead putting his faith in Jayden's orders.

Despite his faults, Oberon is a kind and caring young man who cares about his subordinates, listening to their worries, and offers words of comfort and encouragement. For the sake of his subordinates, he would go as far as to defend their honor in combat even against Rundall lieutenants to prove his commitment and take punishment in place of his men.

As the second book progresses, Oberon's mental health declines as the war makes him question his attachment to Jayden and how his savior actually views him and what Jayden expects of him. Living solely to earn his praise, he feels dejected and displaced when despite his best efforts,he still has not earned Jayden's trust, even if he does, in fact, trust Oberon, but does not voice it in public. Oberon's pathological need for approval and acceptance corrode and break his psyche further, emphasized by the lack of emotional support offered by anyone near him. Others only put further expectations upon him, or downright manipulate him to achieve personal political agendas, which only increases Oberon's anger and frustration. With no one to show him neither care, nor space to allow himself to be vulnerable, leads him to bottle up his emotions to unhealthy degree, pushing him to the brink of insanity and making him more volatile, unstable, and violent. He directs his aggression towards his perceived enemies while protecting his perceived idea of the idolization of Jayden rather than Jayden himself as a coping mechanism to give him purpose and solace.

As Oberon sees that his efforts fail to, in his view, gain the approval of Jayden, along further manipulation by the likes of Shalze, he begins to doubt his allegiance to Jayden. Seeing that was in a disadvantageous state against Sadali's machinations, and that Rundall Castle, where Alaya resided, was assaulted by Gilgamesh, destroy his faith in Jayden. Unable to accept that his savior whom he pledged fealty to was not the perfect messiah, his already fragile mind breaks further. Oberon accuses Jayden of being an impostor before backstabbing him and taking his ring. Deluded to the extreme that Jayden could only be perfect, he vowed to conquer all of Ardra to bestow it upon the "true" Jayden, who was nothing more than his raw idolization of what he believed Jayden to be.

During Book Three, Oberon is aggressive and arrogant, taking the offensive without hesitation, while looking down on his foes, believing them unable to defeat him, as he os confident in his invincibility as he held two of the powerful rings. Yet even in his current state he holds some degree of concern for others, as he looks out for vulnerable villagers, while trying to avoid unnecessary slaughter. During his renewed invasion of Ovis, he regularly mocks Mont as a weak and ineffective king, yet promises he would take care of his nation fairly after killing him. Drunk on power, Oberon's judgment is so clouded that he believes he can defeat the dreaded Realmscourge all by himself. Yet when his attack fails and ends up with a large portion of his army slaughtered, Oberon's boastful demeanor collapses in a manner of seconds, pitifully begging for Jayden to appear and save him.
