Ancient relics found across Valisthea. Their construction closely resembles the "airships" of the Fallen, but unlike them, they do not appear to have fallen from the sky, rather to have stood in place since time immemorial. They illuminate when Clive approaches—though for what reason, it is unknown. After once being lit, they continue to shine with the same blue glow night and day, making them ideal for use as waypoints.
Obelisks (オベリスク, oberisuku?) are fast-travel spots in Final Fantasy XVI. After being attuned with by approaching them on the field, the player can warp to them from the map view whenever they are free to roam by holding on them. They are typically found in all settlements, as well as the beginnings of new areas.
Obelisks appear to be ancient monuments, preceding the Fallen civilization. They are filled with aether and glow blue after being activated. After Valisthea is engulfed in Primogenesis, obelisks begin to spew aether into the sky.
If the player gets Game Over while on the field, they can restart from the nearest activated obelisk without losing progress; however, the point from where they restart may not the actual shortest walk away or the last one activated, simply the one in the nearest direct distance.
Clive Rosfield eventually learns that obelisks were set up by the Ultima collective to direct aether toward the Mothercrystals. During Primogenesis, this function is halted and the obelisks begin to direct it seemingly to the now ever-clouded skies. It is unknown what happens to obelisks after Clive destroys the nexus on Origin and eradicates magic from the world.

Etymology[]
obelisk is a tall, four-sided, narrow tapering monument which ends in a pyramid-like shape at the top, and is said to resemble a petrified ray of the sun-disk. A pair of obelisks usually stood in front of a pylon.
