Nox Suzaku 朱雀の闇 is an entity and optional superboss in Final Fantasy Type-0 available in New Game Plus. It first appears in the game's introductory sequence, called "Unidentified Target." In subsequent playthroughs it can be found throughout the game and fought at the player's discretion. Though not a mission like the others, a mission briefing appears before the party is about to engage it: "The origins of the monstrous Nox Suzaku remain unknown, but Intel analysis confirms that it poses an enormous threat to all of Orience. Central Command orders Class Zero to conduct an air search and eliminate the Nox Suzaku on sight. (Class Zero cannot summon Eidolons during this mission.)" An easier version of the superboss battle also takes place as the boss battle of the "Last Line of Defense" Code Crimson mission of Chapter 6.

It is never explained what Nox Suzaku actually is, only that it is attracted to Class Zero and absorbs phantoma. One theory is that it is an amalgamation of all expended phantoma Class Zero has used, or possibly the phantoma of Class Zero themselves from a previous spiral of Orience's history. The latter theory is supported by Nox Suzaku only appearing after the first playthrough, and would explain why specters of Class Zero cadets are among the enemies it spawns. Nox Suzaku resembles an avian entity, tying into Dominion of Rubrum's guardian beast, the Vermilion Bird.

Its enemy compendium information describes the place where it is fought as place of lost and condemned souls; this is somewhat similar to the souls that end up lost in Chaos in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII; both games are part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy series and thus share a similar mythos, but are not otherwise directly connected.

Nox Suzaku's appearance is based on the player's collection of phantoma, and is somewhat random—it is possible to defeat it and it will immediately reappear. Nox Suzaku transports the party into a dark void, where shades of other characters and monsters in the game, including Class Zero themselves, will attack the player in waves. Defeating all of them will dismiss Nox Suzaku but not defeat it. Nox Suzaku itself only appears in the battle when a member of the player's party is defeated, when a head of the creature will emerge from a portal to gather that fallen party member's phantoma. At this time the player can attack it, and if a Killsight hit is landed, the creature will be stunned for a time and be vulnerable for longer. Nox Suzaku is Level 200 and the shades it spawns Level 99, so the player is advised to be close to or at Level 99 themselves to fight it.

Nox Suzaku (朱雀の闇, Suzaku no Yami?, lit. Darkness of Suzaku) is an entity and optional superboss in Final Fantasy Type-0 available in New Game Plus.

Its origins veiled in mystery, this enigmatic monster was drawn to Orience by a lust of phantoma. The Nox Suzaku's insides are shrouded in darkness, transporting its victims to another astral plane where the lost souls of the Unseen and the Condemned writhe about in agony. Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)

You expect me to believe that you've actually seen the fabled Nox Suzaku? We receive plenty of reports about unidentified crafts, but this seems too far-fetched.

Prime Liaison

It is never explained what Nox Suzaku actually is, only that it is attracted to Class Zero and absorbs phantoma. One theory is that it is an amalgamation of all expended phantoma Class Zero has used, or possibly the phantoma of Class Zero themselves from a previous spiral of Orience's history. The latter theory is supported by Nox Suzaku only appearing after the first playthrough, and would explain why specters of Class Zero cadets are among the enemies it spawns.

Spoilers end here.

Encountering

Nox Suzaku's appearance is based on the player's collection of phantoma, and is somewhat random—it is possible to defeat it and it will immediately reappear. Once it appears, the player is given a notice of such. Until Nox Suzaku is defeated, all phantoma the player collects will instead be absorbed by the creature. It may go away once it absorbs enough.

Once the Nox Suzaku has appeared, the player can find it in the air on the world map and approach it in the airship to battle it.

Battle

The Nox Suzaku in battle.

When Nox Suzaku is defeated, the player receives a reward in-line with tandem mission rewards, based on their time to win, the collected phantoma, and the party deaths. An S-Rank will reward them with a Crystal Fragment and a Megalixir.

Nox Suzaku can reappear even once defeated.

Strategy

Nox Suzaku is a challenging enemy to defeat as he is level 250 on Finis difficulty. Nox Suzaku only appears inside the Abyss after a party member dies. Thus it is advisable to bring Anima Lanterns/Phoenix Pinions for Reraise status and have the Ultima spell (150,000 SPP Reward). Rem can be used for efficient Magic Cancel. The party should employ the Avoid spell.

After Nox Suzaku drags the player into the Abyss, the cadets should use Ultima to clear out the first two rooms. Afterward they will be in a room with an Astral King Behemoth and Ifrit. After allowing either monster to get the cadet down to 0 HP will force the Nox Suzaku to appear. After reviving, Reraise should be reapplied. Ultima can be used to damage Nox Suzaku's head that only appears for a few seconds. It takes about 3-4 Ultimas to defeat Nox Suzaku.

Chapter 6 Code Crimson mission

In the Chapter 6 Code Crimson mission, a much easier version appears serving as the boss once the mission timer is up. It sucks the party into a similar Abyssal Darkness area, but spawns much weaker enemies. The head appears once the wave has been dealt with, not requiring one to sacrifice party members.

Etymology

Nox means "night" in Latin.

The Vermilion Bird is one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. According to Wu Xing, the Taoist five-elemental system, it represents the fire-element, the direction south, and the season summer, correspondingly. Thus it is sometimes called the Vermilion Bird of the South.

It is known as Zhuque (Joo-choo-eh) in Chinese, Suzaku in Japanese, Jujak in Korean, and Chu Tước in Vietnamese. It is described as a red bird that resembles a pheasant (also dubbed as either a sparrow or a peafowl) with a five-colored plumage and is perpetually covered in flames, though it is not to be confused for a phoenix.
