The mines wind up the cliffs north of Narshe to a large snowfield overlooking the town. The lowest floors of the mine have railway tracks, presumably for mine carts to transport equipment, and ledges on either side of the mine entrance outside are spanned by a bridge over the pathway below. The northern area of the lowest floor of the mines is a new shaft dug recently, according to Imperial intelligence briefings, but digging was halted when a frozen Esper was excavated. Unlike the rest of the mines the cave with the Esper has no supports, implying the cavern may have naturally occurred and was dug into by the miners.

The northern passage of the Narshe Mines is a dungeon in Final Fantasy VI, located in Narshe. The mines are the location where the frozen esper Valigarmanda is initially found.

Story

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)
FFVI PC Valigarmanda

Terra meets Valigarmanda in the mines.

The Gestahlian Empire sends in a force consisting of Biggs, Wedge, and Terra to capture the esper recently discovered in a new mineshaft. After fighting their way through the Narshe guards they find the object of their search. The esper resonates with Terra, killing off Biggs and Wedge and destroying the Slave Crown that was robbing Terra of her free will.

Later, the party comes through the mines to rescue the moogle Mog from Lone Wolf.

Spoilers end here.

Mine entrance (PC)

The first room of the mines has a small alcove where a Save point can be found during the game's opening sequence, but it is removed on all subsequent visits. The eastern exit of the room cannot be entered during the Raid on Narshe. A gate at the north end of the room blocks the way, but Biggs will knock it down, and attempting to pass after initiates a battle with the game's first boss, Ymir.

The room north of the gate contains the frozen esper Valigarmanda during the Raid on Narshe, but it is removed on subsequent visits. The north room is otherwise a dead end.

The eastern exit from the main room leads to the rest of the mines, which follow a linear path up to the Narshe Cliffs. The mines consist of three rooms interspersed with segments where they open onto the cliffs and then back inside. The final pass opens on the top of the mine cliff face with an exit to the Narshe Cliffs directly north.

Quests

Raid on Narshe

The first segment of the game ends in the Narshe Mines. When the player approaches the gate to the northern room, a short scene will play in which Biggs knocks it down. Attempting to exit the room this way initiates a brief scene and a boss battle with Ymir. Once Ymir is defeated, the north room can be entered. Approaching Valigarmanda initiates a brief scene and a scripted battle in which Biggs and Wedge are presumably killed and Terra is knocked unconscious, ending the raid sequence.

Recruiting Mog

During their third visit to Narshe after completing the Magitek Research Facility, attempting to enter the Treasure House in Narshe will begin a chase with Lone Wolf the Pickpocket. He will flee through the northern mines and eventually into the Narsh Cliffs. At the end of the chase, the player will have the ability to recruit Mog into the party.

Musical themes

The Narshe Mines have its eponymous theme as a background theme. In the World of Ruin, the theme is replaced with "Dark World", as with the rest of Narshe.

Other appearances

Final Fantasy Record Keeper

The Narshe Mines (北の炭坑 (Name used in Final Fantasy Record Keeper.), Kita no Tankō?) are the setting of two regular dungeons and were later revisited in the Challenge Events Legendary Plunder and A Fateful Coin Toss.
