Description

The Mythril Rod is a weapon in Final Fantasy VII Remake for Aerith. It provides her with Ray of Judgment, an ability that is costly for ATB, but deals great damage and increases an enemy's stagger bonus. The Mythril Rod provides the greatest Magic Attack Magic Attack attribute bonus of any of Aerith's weapons, and is one of her best two offensive weapons.

Mythril Rod artwork for Final Fantasy VII Remake

Concept art.

The Mythril Rod's greatest strength is its tremendous magic attack attribute bonus. It also provides Bloodsucker, which allows Aerith to regenerate HP after defeating enemies, thus being useful for her sustainability. The Mythril Rod is an excellent weapon for Aerith as her greatest potential is in spellcasting. Especially combined with Arcane Ward, spells cast by the Mythril Rod can burst enemies down if they are vulnerable to magic damage.

The main drawbacks of Mythril Rod are its lack of any MP-regeneration improvements when compared with the Silver Staff Silver Staff, which not only provides a tremendous MP-regeneration boost, but also abilities that reduce the costs of spells. Mythril Rod also does not provide Aerith with Reprieve, unlike the Silver Staff and the closest weapon to its magic attack attribute, Reinforced Staff Reinforced Staff, which has many other improvements to her durability.

Overall, the Mythril Rod is Aerith's best pure offensive weapon, but it is a close call between it and the Silver Staff in terms of which is better. Though the Silver Staff's MP-regeneration is far superior, with the Mythril Rod Aerith can pair damaging spells with MP Absorption Materia MP Absorption Materia and also equip the MP Up Materia MP Up Materia to mitigate her MP expenditure, as she will not need HP Absorption Materia HP Absorption Materia due to Mythril Rod's Bloodsucker ability, and be less reliant on Magic Up Materia Magic Up Materia due to Mythril Rod's very high magic attack attribute bonus. The choice between Mythril Rod and Silver Staff comes down to which the player values more between pure damage and MP sustainability, as well as how important the Reprieve ability is for Aerith.

Etymology[]

The word "mythril" or "mithril" is a metal found in many fantasy worlds. It was originally introduced by the fantasy writings of J. R. R. Tolkien, being present in his Middle-earth. It resembles silver but is stronger than steel, and much lighter in weight than either. The author first wrote of it in The Lord of the Rings, and it is retrospectively mentioned in the third, revised edition of The Hobbit in 1966. In the first 1937 edition, the mail shirt given to Bilbo is described as being made of "silvered steel". The name mithril comes from two words in Sindarin—mith, meaning "grey" or "mist", and ril meaning "glitter".
