The gloves in Gizamaluke's Grotto's bell room.

The Mythril Gloves are found in Gizamaluke's Grotto bell room along the stairs at the top of the screen, and in Cleyra's Trunk lower sand path CleyraTreeTrunk9. They are also sold for 980 gil in Burmecia, Summit Station, Treno, Cleyra, Lindblum (second storyline visit), Fossil Roo, Alexandria, and Esto Gaza (before Desert Palace).

Mechanics[]

The Mythril Gloves provide 13 physical Evasion and 7 Magic Evasion, improving the wearer's chance to avoid damage. The gloves give a +1 bonus to the wearer's Spirit when they level up with them equipped. When enough "bonuses" upon level up from gear have been accrued, the character gains a permanent stat increase. Spirit is a generally good stat to raise that determines the HP a character is revived at, the duration of expirable status effects, how often Regen and Poison tick, how frequently the character can enter Trance and how many turns they get while in Trance, among other things.

Use[]

The Mythril Gloves is early game gear Steiner's excursions with Princess Garnet, and for Freya's boss battle against Gizamaluke, Burmecia, and her climb up Cleyra's Trunk, until the superior Thunder Gloves can be found in Cleyra. The Bug Killer ability from the gloves can be useful for these portions of the game as well, and Man Eater against the Soldiers.

The gloves' level up bonus is good but it is not advised to level-grind early on unless the player is stuck in a boss or a dungeon; level grinding and min-maxing are unnecessary in a normal playthrough even when preparing for superbosses. The best stat boost gear will be available in the end of the game, so for best results one would need to limit their EXP intake.

The Mythril Gloves can be used in synthesis in the end of the game when the shops in Black Mage Village gain new wares. The gloves can be used to make the Gauntlets, the ultimate arm guard for Freya and Steiner.

Beatrix can also wear the Mythril Gloves for the brief portion she is a guest during the Battle of Alexandria; the player can swap out her superior Thunder Gloves for something weaker.

Etymology[]

The word "mythril" or "mithril" is a metal found in many fantasy worlds. It was originally introduced by the fantasy writings of J. R. R. Tolkien, being present in his Middle-earth. It resembles silver but is stronger than steel, and much lighter in weight than either. The author first wrote of it in The Lord of the Rings, and it is retrospectively mentioned in the third, revised edition of The Hobbit in 1966. In the first 1937 edition, the mail shirt given to Bilbo is described as being made of "silvered steel". The name mithril comes from two words in Sindarin—mith, meaning "grey" or "mist", and ril meaning "glitter".
