The weapons known as claws are fighting gloves originally meant for enhancing physical attacks with the addition of beast-like nails. The mythril claws were designed to cut and shred, rather than to inflict direct brute force, and the precious material they are made of renders them durable, yet light. Its sharp claws also glisten in a silver light that never fades away. This weapon was made to toy with foes by injuring them with swift attacks, instead of having to calculate how to ravage them with heavy blows.

Mythril Claws is the second weakest claw, providing 65 Attack and can only be equipped by Sabin normally. It can be bought for 800 gil at Mobliz, Nikeah, and Narshe in the World of Balance, or stolen from Belmodar, Vargas, or Exocite.

The word "mythril" or "mithril" is a metal found in many fantasy worlds. It was originally introduced by the fantasy writings of J. R. R. Tolkien, being present in his Middle-earth. It resembles silver but is stronger than steel, and much lighter in weight than either. The author first wrote of it in The Lord of the Rings, and it is retrospectively mentioned in the third, revised edition of The Hobbit in 1966. In the first 1937 edition, the mail shirt given to Bilbo is described as being made of "silvered steel". The name mithril comes from two words in Sindarin—mith, meaning "grey" or "mist", and ril meaning "glitter".
