Final Fantasy Wiki

A mage who bends the forces of the cosmos to their will. The mystic's job command Mystic Arts enables the manipulation of an enemy's mind and body to impede their ability to fight.

Description

The mystic, also known as oracle in the PlayStation version (known as augur in Japanese artistic materials), is a job from Final Fantasy Tactics. A magick-based job, they inflict status ailments with their abilities. At the beginning of the spell's animation, a shikigami appears before inflicting a status. Out of all the magick-based jobs, mystics have the best offensive equipment. It costs 5,970 JP to master this job.

Appearance-wise, the mystic is a Sino-styled class. Its name in the Japanese version, onmyōshi, means yin-yang user, or Taoist in the Chinese language. All of its action abilities are originally written in kanji (Han characters).

Leveling it to level 3 in the War of the Lions unlocks the orator, while leveling it to level 4 along with separate level requirements from white mage, black mage, and time mage unlocks arithmetician. The job unlock level requirements are lower in the PlayStation version.

Gameplay[]

Invigoration from FFTR

A mystic using Invigoration to drain HP from their foe.

The mystic is a support-oriented magick job focused on inflicting status ailments to their foes. They do have a few buffs as well, such as Belief, which bestows Faith. Much like other mages, mystics have low HP and high MP and magick, although lower than the white mage, black mage, and summoner. Mystics have no direct damage spells outside Invigoration, which will decimate Lucavi demons in 4 hits by absorbing 25% of their high max HP. Otherwise, mystics rely on secondary jobs to deal magick damage.

An effective strategy is to use the mystic's versatility with other classes while having Defense Boost and Invigoration for strong, regenerative defense, which becomes even better with Lifefont (and a female's pantherskin bag to regenerate HP). While mystics can be used as a main job, switching to the black mage and equipping Mystic Arts as a secondary job command increases the chance of their debuffs hitting while giving them offensive magick.

A mystic activating their Absorb MP reaction ability (top) and Manafont movement ability (bottom) in battle.

Alternatively, mystics can use Manafont to remedy their MP costs, or be invincible with the time mage's Mana Shield reaction ability, to keep having enemies wipe out MP instead of HP so long as they have at least 1 MP. Like all spellcasters, mystics benefit from the time mage's Swiftspell support ability to shorten their cast times. However, this is more costly at 1000 JP than Magick Boost or Defense Boost.

Books and poles allow range to use with Rend Weapon for a knight or Aimed Shot for a machinist while avoiding Counter from 1 tile. Poles use the wielder's magick attack stat to determine damage, improving vastly with the samurai's Doublehand and a female unit. Increasing magick attack with equipment (wizard's robe and magepower glove) can also help develop Speechcraft for an orator to be more successful with increasing bravery by Praise, or faith by Preach. Casting Trepidation or Intimidate with a party can lower bravery to weaken monks or turn enemies into retreating Chickens. This is even easier with a templar casting Chicken, so it helps to see what enemies have under 60 bravery, or benefit from bravery like monks or strong reaction abilities.

The mystic's Corruption via instant Arithmeticks in conjunction with phoenix down, Seal Evil (from Mustadio's machinist or Balthier's sky pirate) or Arise (from white mage) can quickly kill a group of normal enemies, turned undead, with a support team. Otherwise, it is prone to miss if it does not take too long to normally cast, for usually 1 enemy.

Etymology[]

A practitioner of Onmyōdō is called an Onmyōji or Onmyōshi in the traditional Japanese esoteric cosmology, a mixture of natural science and occultism. It is based on the Chinese philosophies of Wu Xing and Yin and yang, introduced into Japan at the beginning of the 6th century. Onmyōshi were thought to be able to manipulate shikigami, beings from Japanese folklore. It was thought to be some sort of kami, represented by a small ghost or spirit.

The job was originally translated as "Oracle". An oracle is a person or agency considered to provide wise and insightful counsel, prophetic predictions, or precognition of the future inspired by the gods.
