Mushroom Rock Road is a road and mountain formation between Djose and Mi'ihen Highroad in Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2. The area is chiefly known as the site of the ill-fated Operation Mi'ihen where the Crusaders and the Al Bhed join forces to defeat Sin.
Mushroom Rock roadway is a sea reef cover cliff side, after years of high waves and attacks from fiends, Sinspawn and Sin has eroded the cliff and sea reefs to look like giant mushrooms made out of rocks, forming hidden pathways and secrets caves. One such secret cave is the Den of Woe visited in Final Fantasy X-2.
Story[]
Final Fantasy X[]
Yuna and her guardians are on their way to the Mushroom Rock Road, but are stopped at the north end of Mi'ihen Highroad as the Al Bhed and the Crusaders are combining forces in a joint attack called Operation Mi'ihen. Passage through Mushroom Rock is prohibited for the time being, including summoners on pilgrimage. Maester Seymour arrives and allows Yuna's party to pass.
The Al Bhed and Crusaders' plan is to attract Sin by using its spawn to lure it into range for the Al Bhed to use their machina. Morale for the mission is high with not only a summoner present, but also two of the Yevon maesters; Seymour and Kinoc. Kinoc mentions offhandedly that the mission is doomed to fail, but embraces Auron as an old friend and wishes to know what he has been up to the last ten years since leaving Bevelle and guarding Lord Braska, but his questions are brushed off.
Ultimately, the plan fails as Kinoc anticipated, and the Crusaders and Al Bhed are decimated by Sin's onslaught. Yuna sends the fallen, and Auron tells Tidus that Jecht, in the form of Sin, showed up to see his son. A raging Tidus runs into the water and feels Sin's presence, beginning to believe Sin may actually be Jecht despite the apparent impossibility of it.
Final Fantasy X-2[]
Following the Eternal Calm, the Youth League built their base of operations at the summit and uses the summit trail as their training ground. Yuna, Rikku and Paine encounter Logos and Ormi, and assuming that there is a sphere nearby, they decide to follow them. Along the way, they meet Yaibal, an enthusiastic Youth League member who is in awe of meeting the famous Yuna. The Gullwings join the gauntlet where they encounter Logos and Ormi running towards a ravine. At the end of the road, they encounter Elma who is proud that they passed the fiends. The Gullwings ride the elevator to the Youth League Headquarters at the summit.
If the Gullwings side with the Youth League over the awesome sphere debacle, the legionnaires escort them to the headquarters while warning them of the sleeping Drowsy Ochu on the way. If the Gullwings side with New Yevon, the legionnaires will battle them. Reaching the end, Elma is disappointed that Yuna gave the sphere to New Yevon and also battles them. After she is defeated, the Gullwings arrive on the elevator to see that Yaibal disabled it to prevent conflict.
In Chapter 5, if the Gullwings sided with the Youth League, they can participate in a tournament where they can battle the league's top warriors, such as Yaibal, Elma, and Lucil. After the tournament, Lucil holds a speech about Spira's future. If the Gullwings side with New Yevon, they cannot attend the tournament. Reaching the elevator, Yaibal speaks to them before going up.
Locations[]
Mushroom Rock[]
The initial section of Mushroom Rock Road (入口, Iruguchi?, lit. Entrance), this cliffside area connects to the Mi'ihen Highroad. The path forks here; the left trail leads towards the summit of Mushroom Rock Road, and the right trail leads to Mushroom Rock Road and Djose beyond.
In Final Fantasy X, several items may be found here by speaking to Crusaders in the area: a Hi-Potion, A Phoenix Down, a Tough Bangle, an Ether, and a Remedy. Clasko prevents the party from moving on to Mushroom Rock Road while Operation Mi'ihen is underway. O'aka temporarily sets up shop in this area, standing by the valley section of the fork.
Valley[]
Valley (谷間, Tanima?) is a long and winding section of Mushroom Rock Road connects the main section of the road to the summit. The steep, narrow path cannot be traversed without the aid of the emblems of Yevon scattered throughout the area, creating lifts that propel travelers up or down the path.
In Final Fantasy X, a Save Sphere may be found at the entrance to this area, along with a Crusader who gives the party a Hi-Potion and explains the platforms' utility. An overhang a good ways into the area holds a Crusader with ten Potions and a chest with 1000 gil. A little further in is a chest with a Remedy. Further along, Shelinda may be found, and she will heal the party if they request it. Near the end of the area is a chest containing a Hi-Potion.
Precipice[]
The Precipice (断崖, Dangai?) relatively open area of Mushroom Rock Road is dominated by two areas of flat land, connected by a lift that runs between them. A large elevator ferries passengers up to the plateau.
In Final Fantasy X, a Crusader may be talked to just beyond the lift into the area, granting an X-Potion. A narrow path left leads to a lift down, where a Serene Armlet may be found on a small plateau. A man pacing around may give 400 gil if spoken to. Just below the lift to the upper area of the Precipice, a winding, narrow path may be found, leading to the tenth volume of Al Bhed Primers. On the level above is a woman with a Mega-Potion, as well as a Save Sphere.
Plateau[]
The Plateau (高台, Takadai?) is an open area situated high on the Mushroom Rock Road, connecting the precipice and the ridge.
Ridge[]
The Ridge (司令部周辺, Shirei-bu Shūhen?, lit. Headquarters Area) is the highest area of the Mushroom Rock Road, and is a prime vantage point overlooking the land below.
In Final Fantasy X, this area is the command center for the Crusaders during Operation Mi'ihen. O'aka may be found by the Save Sphere, peddling his wares to the Crusaders.
Gatta is also present and speaking to him will give the choice to either suggest he deserves to fight on the front lines, or stay back and guard the command center. This decision decides whether Gatta or Luzzu survives Operation Mi'ihen—by telling Gatta he should be on the front lines, he will die, but if any other situation occurs, Luzzu will die.
Inside the command tent are chests containing a Serene Bracer and a Mega-Potion.
Beach[]
The Beach (浜辺, Hamabe?) is a one-time location the player is where the party ends up after the end of Operation Mi'ihen. The area is laden with corpses and Gatta will be here, either alive or dead. Talking to him will trigger a cutscene that transports the player to Aftermath.
The secret area Battle Site is on the same map but can be traversed between.
Aftermath[]
Aftermath (アルベド兵器跡, Aru Bedo Heiki Ato?, lit. Al Bhed Weapons Remains) is a large beach area. A Save Sphere can be found in the middle of the area, and a Hi-Potion is in a chest to the west of it. O'aka can be found near the exit to the area, but he is selling only items.
Lord Mi'ihen's Statue[]
Lord Mi'ihen's Statue (Valley (谷底, Tanisoko?, lit. Valley Bottom) in the menu) is down a secluded trail with a floating rock that transports the party to a statue of Lord Mi'ihen. If the party possesses the Rusty Sword and places it at the foot of the statue, a glyph will shine behind the statue. A chest containing Auron's Celestial Weapon, Masamune, will appear after the glyph is examined. If one has the Celestial Mirror, they will be able to acquire the weapon.
Youth League Headquarters[]
The Youth League Headquarters is located at the ruins of the Machina cannon that was destroyed by Sin in Final Fantasy X.
Secret areas[]
Battle Site[]
The Battle Site (キノコ岩戦場跡, Kinoko-iwa Senjō Ata?) is a secret area found by searching the coordinates X: 39 - 43 / Y: 56 - 60 on the Fahrenheit. Players can find the Phantom Bangle accessory for Lulu.
The Beach is on the same map (and this is what the area is called in the menu) but it cannot be traversed between.
Valley Bottom[]
An area at the bottom of the Valley, this is a secret area found by inputting the password GODHAND on the Fahrenheit. The area is called "Mushroom Rock" (キノコ岩谷底, Kinoko-iwa Tanisoko?, lit. Mushroom Rock - Valley Bottom) on the airship map list. Players can find Rikku's Celestial Weapon, the Godhand if they possess the Celestial Mirror.
Den of Woe[]
The Den of Woe is a secret area, found only in Final Fantasy X-2. It is a cave beneath the Mushroom Rock Road sealing a mass of pyreflies inside. The entryway is sealed with ten spheres needed as keys.
Quests[]
Final Fantasy X[]
Gatta and Luzzu[]
The Ridge is the command center for the Crusaders during Operation Mi'ihen. Gatta is found here and speaking to him will give the choice to either suggest he deserves to fight on the front lines, or stay back and guard the command center. This decision decides whether Gatta or Luzzu survives Operation Mi'ihen—by telling Gatta he should be on the front lines, he will die, but if any other situation occurs, Luzzu will die.
Dark Magus Sisters[]
In the International, PAL, and HD Remaster versions, after Yuna and her guardians are branded traitors of Yevon, three summoners wander the road near the exit to the Mi'ihen Highroad, and will summon the Dark Magus Sisters if approached, which can be fought together or separately. This is available after gaining control of the airship.
To avoid the three sisters and still get Auron's sphere and Celestial Weapon, enter from the Djose Road to avoid the summoners. This allows the player to reach the other areas of the rock road and still receive the items, without going out of their way or getting ambushed.
During the persecution of sisters, the random encounters are suspended in the area leading to the Valley, the Valley itself and the Precipice. This will happen until the player leaves the area, uses the soft reset, or defeats to all three Dark Magus Sisters.
