A pugilist is an expert in hand-to-hand combat. Through rigorous training, he forges devastating weapons of his limbs. Having said that, fists and feet don't deal near as much damage as a blade. But what does that matter when you can land several blows for each swing of the sword? Aye, what a pugilist lacks in destructive force, he makes up for in speed and cunning. Rather than trying to deal great damage with a single blow, he pummels his foe with lightning-fast combinations. If you become as good as yours truly, your combinations will be so swift and seamless, folk won't be able to tell when one technique ends and another begins! Hah hah hah!
The Monk is a job in Final Fantasy XIV, introduced as the Discipline of War Pugilist in the original release. Players start as a Pugilist, and then may upgrade to Monk using the Soul Crystal obtained from the quest Brother from Another Mother after Pugilist reaches level 30. Over the course of the Monk storyline, the adventurer does not actually seem to be taught anything by the job-instructor, Widargelt Beake, and is largely separated from him between levels 30 and 50. It is implied that their skills as a Monk are a continuation of their training as a Pugilist, combined with the opening of chakra through combat in aether-suffused areas, rather than being completely new abilities conferred by their soul crystal as with most other jobs.

Pugilist[]

The path of the pugilist is one of incessant training aimed at mastering the traditional techniques of hand-to-hand combat. Though pugilists command formidable power when unarmed, they are wont to use metal, leather, and bone weaponry to maximize their destructive potential.
Their preference for fighting at close quarters makes negotiating distances an absolute necessity. Many among them accomplish this by avoiding burdensome armor, allowing for maximum mobility while they move in for the kill.Lodestone
Pugilists attack with hora and knuckle-dusters, and are close-quarters melee attackers. Their positioning plays a pivotal role in battle, with some of their weaponskills increasing their power or guaranteeing a critical hit when delivered at the side or back of their target.
Pugilists do not follow the same combo system as the other Disciplines of War, and instead can perform attacks based on what battle form they are currently in. Most weaponskills require the Pugilist to be in a particular battle form (each of considered a self-buff granted by an appropriate weaponskill), and executing them will allow them to change into another form. Like all melee physical DPS jobs, the Pugilists have positional weaponskills, which increase the damage dealt while attacking the enemy from rear or flank.
Monk[]
Though now under Garlean rule, the city-state of Ala Mhigo once boasted the greatest military might of all Eorzea. Among its standing armies were the monks—ascetic warriors as dreaded by foes on the field of battle as the city-state's great pikemen.
The monks comprised an order known as the Fist of Rhalgr, and it was to this god—the Destroyer—that they devoted their lives of worship. By mastering seats of power within the body known as chakra, they are capable of performing extraordinary physical feats.Lodestone
Retaining the Pugilist's stance mechanics, Monks differ in their aesthetic and in the quest characters. Monks place more emphasis on the "chakra" and elements of meditation than the typical close-quarters combat arts. In Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, Monks are overhauled to use Beast Chakras in their new Masterful Blitz mechanic. The important character Lyse Hext is a Monk.

In the time of the Sixth Umbral Calamity, some people who escaped the great flooding followed the guiding light of a meteor which led them to the highlands of Gyr Abania. Thus they devoted themselves to Rhalgr the Destroyer, whose streaking star had granted them salvation, and found the Fist of Rhalgr. Within their temple, the devotees of the Fist tempered body and spirit in an effort to grow closer to their deity. Through their meditations did they discover within themselves foci of power - chakras - and devised a martial art that channeled the life energies of the practitioner into destructive force.
The Fist of Rhalgr evolved into a formidable military force, and gradually nurtured an alliance with the royal family of Ala Mhigo. Eventually, the Mad King Theodoric, grown fearful of the order's political power, had the Temple of the Fist burned to the ground in the Sixth Astral Era. Thus the warrior monks and their teaching were lost - scattered like ashes on the wind.
Pugilist[]
The Pugilist Guild's guild receptionist Gagaruna directs the adventurer towards Hamon who is initially delighted to train them, and has them train alongside his other pupil, Chuchuto Brightstar. Later, Hamon and the two encounter Hamon's former apprentice Rurukuta Tornstar, who humiliates Hamon by proving him a shadow of his former glory, and discourages him from continuing to fight. Chuchuto encourages the adventurer to face Hamon in combat to help Hamon regain his strength, and after a few rounds, Hamon regains confidence. The group defeats Hamon's old adversary and crime syndicate kingpin, Weggfarr Wideaxe, and Hamon congratulates the adventurer on their progress.
Monk[]
After speaking to Gagaruna again, the adventurer is directed to Erik, found in the Goldsmith's Guild. A researcher of the "chakra", Erik tasks the adventurer with helping Widargelt, who sees their potential as a Monk, research in aether-heavy battle-ravaged areas. Widargelt is not interested in helping Erik, and is only interested in opening his own chakra in those areas, encouraging the adventurer to do the same. After the adventurer obtains their relic gear, Widargelt asks them to help him restore Ala Mhigo. When he learns the adventurer's seventh chakra had been opened and he was denied of his, he attempts to defeat them; after failing, he grants the adventurer their final relic gear piece, and declares he has learned to fight not for vengeance, but for life.
Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward[]
Speaking with Erik, the adventurer learns that Widargelt intends to rebuild the Fist of Rhalgr with a new generation of monks. He introduces the adventurer to two of his new pupils, D'zentsa and O'tchakha, a pair of Miqo'te orphans who turned up to learn from him out of the blue. A group of unidentified monks attacks Widargelt who unlocks a new chakra not previously known about during the fight.
After several encounters with this rival sect, Widargelt and the adventurer learn the monks belong to the 'Sect of Shadow'—an opposing sect of the old Fist of Rhalgr to Widargelt's 'Sect of Light', and that there are 14 chakra, with 7 of shadow as well as the 7 of light the adventurer has already unlocked. Erik expands on the history of the Fist of Rhalgr, explaining that the Sect of Shadow betrayed the Sect of Light after the latter allied with the Ala Mhigan royal family. The Sect of Shadow survived the destruction of the Fist of Rhalgr's temple, and had believed the Sect of Light to be destroyed.
D'zentsa and O'tchakha are a part of the Sect of Shadow, and are using Widargelt and the adventurer to unlock their light chakra. Widargelt and the adventurer try to get D'zentsa and O'tchakha to cooperate rather than have their sects fight, but they refuse. The two find O'tchakha on death's door who explains their master and father figure, a man named H'raha Tia, forced her and D'zentsa to fight to the death. Though she avoided being killed, she now fears for D'zentsa, who is still under H'raha's mercy. O'tchakha works with the adventurer and Widargelt to unlock their chakra so that they might rescue D'zentsa.
Ultimately, the adventurer unlocks thirteen of the fourteen chakra, though the final one eludes them, and the only known way to unlock it is in a fight to the death. Though O'tchakha offers her life to unlock it, the adventurer refuses, saying that they can fight against H'raha together instead. During the confrontation the adventurer blocks H'raha's ultimate attack and in so doing unlocks their final chakra. With that power unlocked, the adventurer defeats H'raha and rescues D'zentsa. Widargelt, the adventurer, O'tchakha, and D'zentsa all agree to work together to rebuild the Fist of Rhalgr with both sects working cooperatively.

Pugilists and monks wield various fist weapons. Their armor is primarily made up of "Striking" gear, light armor with average defenses that they share with samurai.
The primary attribute for pugilists and monks is strength, which boosts their attack power, and should be prioritized over other attributes. As DPS disciplines, they draw the most benefit from the critical hit, direct hit, skill speed, and determination secondary attributes, which all improve their damage dealing capabilities in some way.

Job gauge[]
Job Gauges were introduced in 4.0. The Monk has two gauges, the Lightning Gauge and the Chakra Gauge. As of Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, Grease Lightning is reworked into trait instead, so the Lightning Gauge is gone.

Chakra Gauge.
The Chakra Gauge shows how many Chakra the Monk currently has open. These are acquired by using weaponskills once the Monk has acquired Deep Meditation trait on level 38. Accumulating the maximum amount of Chakra will allow the Monk to execute several powerful actions such as Howling Fist (acquired at level 40), The Forbidden Chakra (acquired at level 54), and Enlightenment (acquired at level 74).
In Endwalker, upon learning the trait Enhanced Perfect Balance at level 60, the Monk will unlock the Master's Gauge as well as Solar and Lunar Nadi. Master's Gauge lets the Monk uses Masterful Blitz, which requires Beast Chakras: Coeurl Chakra, Raptor Chakra, and Opo-opo Chakra, opened using weaponskills on their respective forms. When some combination of three types of Chakra have been opened, they can use Masterful Blitz: Elixir Field (3 same types of Chakras), Flint Strike, which upgrades to Rising Phoenix at level 86 (one of each Chakra), or Celestial Revolution (two of the same Chakras). All Blitzes, sans Celestial Revolution, will have high single-target potencies with some form of AoE fall-off damage.
Using Elixir Field will open the Lunar Nadi, while using Flint Strike/Rising Phoenix will open the Solar Nadi. Celestial Revolution will open whichever Nadi is missing (but will default to Lunar if none have been opened). When both Nadis are opened and there are at least 3 opened Chakra of any type, the Monk can use Tornado Kick, which upgrades to Phantom Rush at level 90.
