Monk, also known as Karate, is a boss from Final Fantasy IV. Stricken with amnesia after his separation from Cecil, Edward, and Rydia, he was made Captain of the Guards in Baron.

Yang was originally intended to specifically target Cecil with physical attacks every turn, provoking responses from Cecil. This is never executed because the developers mistakenly had Yang target Dark Knight Cecil instead of Paladin Cecil. Cecil's responses to Yang's attack are as follow: "Come on, Yang!" and "...... It's me!"

Strategy[edit | edit source]

This battle is essentially scripted. Yang will attack twice with Kick, which will do low to mediocre damage to the entire party. After this, Cecil can strike with a physical attack which will immediately end the battle. It is possible to deplete all of Yang's HP instead of ending the battle through the AI script if using magic attacks from the other party members.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

A monk is a person who practices religious asceticism, living either alone or with any number of other monks. A monk may be a person who decided to dedicate his life to serving all other living beings, or to be an ascetic who voluntarily chooses to leave mainstream society and live his life in prayer and contemplation. The concept is ancient and can be seen in many religions and in philosophy.

Karate is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom. It developed from the indigenous Ryukyuan martial arts under the influence of Chinese Kung Fu, particularly Fujian White Crane.
