The Mist Continent is plagued by Mist

The Mist Continent is the largest of the four main continents in the world of Gaia in Final Fantasy IX. It is the first continent players encounter, and is home to several locations important for the game. The continent takes its name from its thick blanket of Mist which blocks out sunlight at lower elevations. Mist Continent is the most lush continent of all the Gaian continents in Final Fantasy IX sporting green fields and deep forests.

The Mist that covers the land is the power source for the majority of airships; only recently has Lindblum developed steam engines. The Mist is also known to spawn dangerous monsters. The Mist is discharged through the roots of the giant Iifa Tree on the Outer Continent. Template:TOClimit

Demographics

Due to the presence of Mist the people were forced to migrate to higher ground to escape it. Hardly anyone visits the Mist-infested lower regions; only the Qu are known to reside there within their marsh. Although Burmecia lies at a low level, the constant rain that falls there may dissipate the mist in the area in some way.

Mist Continent is home to three nations: Alexandria, Lindblum and Burmecia, which has split into two sects -- the titular Burmecians and the people of Cleyra, who have shut themselves off from the rest of the world behind a giant sandstorm. The three nations are linked on both lower and higher levels, below and above the Mist. North Gate lies between Alexandria and Burmecia, South Gate between Alexandria and Lindblum, and Gizamaluke's Grotto between Lindblum and Burmecia.

Most of the locations in Final Fantasy IX are on Mist Continent, as travel to other continents is difficult due to Mist-powered airships not being capable of inter-continental travel. As Mist Continent is the world's most populous region, the Iifa Tree predominantly discharges Mist on it, as it stimulates the fighting spirit to trigger wars.

History

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)

Mist Continent was the first continent to become populated and the first where civilisation flourished after the disaster that struck the planet 5000 years prior to the game's start. 5000 years ago the alien planet Terra attempted to assimilate with the planet of Gaia, but the Fusion was a failure and left Gaia's surface in ruins and wiped out its civilisations. Thousands of years later, life starts to slowly recover, and new civilisations are born on the Mist Continent.

To incite war among the people, Garland directed Mist to flow on the continent through the Iifa Tree's roots and the continent became known as the Mist Continent. Numerous wars plagued the nations until the discovery of Mist-powered airships, after which the wars ceased.

The player party eventually defeats the SoulCage within the Iifa Tree, and the blanket of Mist covering the continent dissipates. This renders almost all airships useless until the Mist returns worldwide at the start of Disc 4. At the end of the game, however, Iifa Tree is destroyed for good freeing the world of Mist.
