Mindflayer appears as an enemy the [[Flying Fortress]], the [[Cavern of Ice]], the [[Citadel of Trials]], and the [[Chaos Shrine (Final Fantasy)|Chaos Shrine]]. They are dangerous foes, as they have some potent special attacks. Its physical attack, while doing only one point of damage per hit, may cause [[Instant Death|instant death]] and is non-elemental. Protective equipment and [[NulDeath (Final Fantasy)|NulDeath]] cannot add resistance, so the only way to lower the chance of the instant death triggers is to have high [[Magic Defense (stat)|magic defense]].

The Mindflayer is an enemy and a summon. It uses its signature move Mind Blast to inflict Paralysis and [[Sap (status)|Sap]] to one target along with [[non-elemental]] damage. It can be found in the [[Lodestone Cavern]], where the party is additionally hampered by the Cavern's magnetic field, which prevents the use of their stronger equipment.

Additionally, the Mindflayer rarely [[Item drop|drops]] an [[Mindflayer (Final Fantasy IV item)|eponymous item]] that teaches [[Rydia]] to [[Summon (command)|summon]] the Mindflayer. The Mindflayer summon will uses Mind Blast, which is identical to the enemy's version.
