Final Fantasy VII

Mmidgardzolom4is

Midgar Zolom is one of the most formidable enemies fought in Final Fantasy VII. It appears in the swamp by Mythril Mines, near Midgar, next to the Chocobo Farm.

When the player first gets to this point in the game, the Midgar Zolom is very difficult to defeat, so it is easiest to avoid it by going through the swamp on a Chocobo. It is difficult to Game Over against the serpent as Midgar Zolom will usually flick an enemy out of battle, who will be alive on the side of the swamp if the other party members die.

If defeated, it will still respawn in the swamp.

Etymology

The name hails from Norse mythology, in which Midgardsormr (better known in the West as the "World Serpent", or "Jörmungandr") was the middle child of Loki and a giantess named Angrboda. Odin threw it into the ocean that encircles Midgar (Earth). It eventually grew large enough to literally be able to reach around the entire world and bite its own tail. It had been foreseen that on the day of Ragnarök, it would do battle with its arch-nemesis, the thunder god Thor. The sky would darken from the poison mist emitted by Midgardsormr, and the battle will end in the death of both. Thor will first kill Midgardsormr and then stagger nine steps before dying from its poison.

"Terrato" may be related to the Italian word sotterrato, which means "buried".
