I am the waves that bear, I am the winds that guide.
I am the evening stars, I am the morning sky.
I am born of the sea, and there shall I die.The Sailors' Requiem
Middle La Noscea is a location in Final Fantasy XIV. A pastoral landscape of rolling hills bordering Galadion Bay formerly known as Bearded Rock, the creation of several rivers in region following the Seventh Umbral Calamity made for a fertile landscape for Limsa Lominsa's pirates-turned-farmers. This low-level region serves as the starting zone for new characters starting out in Limsa Lominsa as a marauder or arcanist.
History[]
Prior to the Seventh Umbral Calamity, the region now known as middle La Noscea was known as Bearded Rock and was considered to be part of lower La Noscea. The region took its name from a large rock upon which the pirates would be executed via crucifixion, around which its main encampment of Camp Bearded Rock would spring up. According to one legend, one such pirate survived long enough that his beard grew so long as to encircle the rock, giving it its name. Among those crucified at Bearded Rock was the infamous One-eyed Wylfred following his defeat in the 72nd Trident, the septennial contest for Limsa Lominsa's admiralty.
Severe damage caused by the Calamity destroyed Camp Bearded Rock and the eponymous rock while separating the region from lower La Noscea. Several new rivers sprung up in the area, bringing new life to the soil. The Bearded Rock name gave way to its current designation of middle La Noscea, and the area was quickly turned into farmland tended by former pirates as part of Admiral Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn's initiative to move the city-state away from piracy.
When the Warrior of Light, then a fledgling marauder or arcanist, began their adventures in Limsa Lominsa, they were dispatched by Baderon Tenfingers to Summerford Farms in middle La Noscea to aid Staelwyrn and his crew in their efforts to transition from deckhands to farmhands. While investigating reports of suspicious characters in the area they met Y'shtola Rhul, and the pair were attacked by an enraged goobbue. After the scuffle, the adventurer found a Crystal of Light nearby, and in retrieving it received a vision from Hydaelyn, awakening their Echo.
Geography[]
Zephyr Drift[]
Making up the southern end of middle La Noscea is the Zephyr Drift, just outside of Limsa Lominsa past the Zephyr Gate. This idyllic grassland draws its name from the westerly breeze that graces the region. Passage to Cedarwood in lower La Noscea can be found in the southeast.
- La Thagran Checkpoint
- This checkpoint was originally established by the Maelstrom to watch over the La Thagran Eastroad. With the Maelstrom stretched thin following the Calamity and kobold incursions proving rare, jurisdiction of the checkpoint was left to the Yellowjackets.
- Zephyr Gate
- One of two land entrances to Limsa Lominsa, the Zephyr Gate connects to the city's central spire, the Mizzenmast, via a bridge known as the Procession of Terns.
Summerford[]
These fertile farmlands, braced by the Rogue and Nym Rivers and split by the Agelyss River, are the largest region in middle La Noscea. Prior to the Calamity, Summerford was where Camp Bearded Rock and its eponymous rock could be located.
- Agelyss River / West Agelyss River
- One of two new rivers formed in middle La Noscea by the Calamity, the Agelyss flows down from the Agelyss Wise in eastern La Noscea. This stretch of the river is also known as the west Agelyss River to differentiate it from its source waters to the east.
- The Cookpot
- A natural rock formation in the shape of a circle that has become home to a herd of aurochs.
- Rogue River
- The second of two rivers formed by the Calamity, this river divides Summerford from the Zephyr Drift. It takes its name from the thieves that used it to smuggle their ill-gotten goods in the early days following the Calamity. The Rogue River is known to swell from late spring runoff from Mt. O'Ghomoro, and the man-made crossings initially needed to cross it in such conditions are what lent Summerford its name.
- Seasong Grotto
- A shallow cavern within which stands a monolith inscribed with the Sailors' Requiem, an old Lominsan poem.
- Summerford Farms
- The only major settlement in middle La Noscea, Summerford Farms lies atop a hill along the region's eastern edge, affording it a view of the fields below and Limsa Lominsa beyond. As part of an initiative to rebuild following the Calamity, former pirates bereft of ship under the command of Staelwyrn were recruited to establish the Farms, with the orange orchards found throughout Summerford tended to by the crew.
- Tiller's Rest
- A small shed across the Agelyss from Summerford Farms, where deckhands-turned-farmhands take a rest away from the prying eyes of their captain.
Three-malm Bend[]
Cleft from the rest of middle La Noscea in the Calamity, this stretch of land lies several yalms below the rest of middle La Noscea. Continuing northwest through the Bend leads to Quarterstone in western La Noscea, while Raincatcher Gully in eastern La Noscea lies to the northeast beyond the De Nevelle Checkpoint.
- De Nevelle Checkpoint
- Much like its counterpart to the east, this checkpoint was founded to watch over the De Nevelle Westroad. Unlike the La Thagran Checkpoint, however, it remains under Maelstrom command, not out of fear of beastmen incursions, but of the XIVth Imperial Legion stationed at Castrum Occidens.
- The Descent
- A rift formed in the Calamity that split middle La Noscea in two, the ground heaving and leaving the two sides at drastically different elevations. A structure of wooden scaffolding connects the two sides and extends eastwards into Woad Whisper Canyon.
- Foremast
- The newest and largest of the Yellowjackets' garrisons, the Foremast connects to Coral Tower in Limsa Lominsa via an underground passage. As with the Mizzenmast, the Foremast takes its name from a ship's mast, in this case the most forward mast to represent the city-state's resolve the lead the fight.
- Nym River
- Named for the Nymian ruins in Bronze Lake from which the river flows, the Nym River is not a new creation of the Calamity like the region's other two rivers, but it was nonetheless affected drastically. The draining of Bronze Lake drastically altered its course to where it now flows through Woad Whisper Canyon into the Descent.
- Skylift
- An outpost built at the west end of the Descent, where the Nym River drains into the sea. As with the structure to its east, Skylift is made up of wooden scaffolding, but with the addition of a series of pulleys to lift goods up and down the cliff, and docks for small dirigibles to transport goods across the waters to Limsa Lominsa.
- Woad Whisper Canyon
- Little more than a shallow valley before the Calamity, Woad Whisper Canyon was drastically changed when the Nym River suddenly began flowing into it, carving it into a deep gorge that would eventually break into the Descent.
