Mid

Mid Previa is the grandson of Cid Previa in Final Fantasy V. Cid raised him after his father died three years prior to the events of the game. Mid idolizes his grandfather and wants to become a great inventor just like him. Mid also appears in the Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals anime.

Cid is a recurring name for an older inventor-type man in the series. Since Mid's introduction in Final Fantasy V, "Mid" has also become a recurring name for characters with some relation to their world's Cid: Mid from Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is the grandchild of a character named Cid Pollendina, Balthier's birth name is Ffamran mied Bunansa, Cid Garlond's father's name is "Midas", and the Cid of Final Fantasy XI has a son named "Midras".

Appearance

Mid is a blond boy who wears round red glasses with yellow lenses and a long purple cloak and red shoes. While his portrait and Yoshitaka Amano artworks depict him with glasses, he does not wear them in his field sprite. His hair is cut into a bowl cut and he wears a gold choker with a large red orb.

Personality

Mid looks up to his grandfather, Cid, who taught him to never quit. Cid led Mid into becoming interested in science. Mid is shocked to learn that his grandfather has given up, and so he knocks some sense back to him. Mid always enthusiases to learn more about any given subject, and is never willing to give up, thinking that there must always be some solution to the hardships they face. He at times becomes so immersed in his studies that he is barely aware of what is going on around him.

Final Fantasy V

Mid and Cid — Mid encouraging his grandfather.

Mid is visiting the haunted Library of the Ancients whose books have become possessed. Bartz, Lenna, Galuf, and Faris fight the monster Byblos while Mid is reading a book, and does not seem to notice that anything at odds is going on.

Cid has come to blame himself for the destruction of the Fire Crystal, and Mid is stunned to hear that his grandfather has given up on science. Mid rushes to his side to knock some sense into him. Together, the two become a formidable team by combining their intellect. Using a book found in the library, Mid and Cid refit Karnak's Fire-Powered Ship to run without the Crystal or the wind, allowing the Light Warriors to travel the world to save the remaining Crystal. The ship is destroyed in a whirlpool, but the party makes it back to the Library of the Ancients via black chocobo. Mid and Cid tell the party they saw King Tycoon in the desert to the west, and provoke a Sandworm attack to allow the group to enter the desert to search for him.

While the party explores Gohn, Cid and Mid fly the black chocobo to its home where they fall into a pitfall, and meet up with the party at the Catapult. The group finds the Fire-Powered Ship unharmed in this ancient underwater deposit, as well as an ancient airship, which Cid activates. When the Ronka Ruins lift off, Cid and Mid instruct the party how to infiltrate the vessel and find the Earth Crystal. They retrofit the airship with Adamantite so it can fly up to the ruins. Afterward, the two tell the party how to open a portal to Galuf's World using the crashed meteorites.

Krile Mid — Krile tells Mid to take care of Cid.

In the Merged World, Mid and Cid continue to help Bartz implement a submarine function to the airship. Krile and Mid show their concern for each other before the party leaves the Catapult. After the Light Warriors save the world, Mid receives a letter from Krile stating how she misses everyone, since they have all moved on.

Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals

Yes. I am the Mid. Really.

Several years later, Mid sees the demon Ra Devil raid his grandfather's grave. Watching in horror as the he removes Cid's brain from his body, Ra Devil pierces Mid through the heart and he dies on the spot. Unable to rest, he becomes a ghost, and befriends Prettz and Linaly, the descendant of his friend Bartz. With his help, they defeat Ra Devil, who has transformed into the god of oblivion, Deathgyunos, using the Crystals. In the end Mid retrieves Cid's brain from Deathgyunos's body and is able to pass over to the afterlife.

In the Dawn of Souls and 20th Anniversary remakes of the original Final Fantasy, Mid is one of the automatic names the player can choose for the Red Mage job.
