Mid

Mid Previa is the grandson of Cid Previa in Final Fantasy V, also appearing in Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals. Mid idolizes his grandfather, one of the foremost inventors in Bartz's world, and wants to become a great inventor just like him. Mid and his grandfather come to work alongside the Light Warriors to protect the world's crystals.

Mid is the first iteration of the character in the Final Fantasy series, and later entries have used the name "Mid" for characters with some relation to their world's Cid.

History[]

Before Final Fantasy V[]

Cid raised Mid after his father died three years prior to the events of the game.[citation needed]

Final Fantasy V[]

Mid and Cid

The Light Warriors met Mid while he was visiting the Library of the Ancients, where some books became possessed. Mid was reading a book about the ability to run the fire-powered ship without needing the fire crystal or the air. While absorbed in his book, the monster Byblos appeared, which the warriors saved him from; after Byblos was defeated, Mid appeared confused, unaware of what had happened. He then talked to the Light Warriors, who explained that his grandfather had gone into depression after the fire crystal had shattered due to blaming himself; Mid was shocked, believing this to be entirely uncharacteristic of Cid, and accompanied them to find his grandfather in his depressed state.[1]

Mid found his grandfather drunk in the pub at Karnak, and inspired Cid by reminding him that it was Cid who always told him to never give up or be afraid of failing. The words encouraged Cid, and the two went to refit the fire-powered ship to run without wind or fire crystal, following the design Mid had seen in the library.[2] Seeing the two worked together awakened some memories in Galuf Halm Baldesion, who recalled his own relationship with his granddaughter, Krile Mayer Baldesion.[3]

The Light Warriors returned to the Library of the Ancients by black chocobo, informing Cid and Mid that the fire-powered ship had fallen in a whirlpool (unbeknownst to them, it had sunk to the Catapult). Cid and Mid shrugged this off and said they could simply build a knew one, instead telling them they had heard rumors of King Alexander Highwind Tycoon being sighted headed to the Desert of Shifting Sands to the west.[4] To cross it, the two suggested provoking a sandworm to defeat and then use as a bridge.[5]

While the Light Warriors explored Gohn, Cid and Mid flew the black chocobo to return it to its home, only to fall through a pitfall into the Catapult. There, they found the fire-powered ship, an ancient airship, and the Light Warriors, who had also fallen through a pitfall in Gohn. There, Cid activated the airship, and the Catapult became their base of operations. Cid and Mid then instructed the party to acquire adamantite to fly the airship up to Ronka Ruins and save the earth crystal.[6]

The Light Warriors were unable to save the earth crystal, and Cid and Mid headed to the meteorite by Tycoon to return the leftover adamantite.[7] As they did so, the meteorite appeared to absorb the adamantite, using it to recharge. Since the Light Warriors wished to use the meteorite to travel to Galuf's world and follow the awakened Exdeath, Cid and Mid helped them acquire adamantite at each of the meteorites to create a warp point to the world.

Krile Mid

Krile tells Mid to take care of Cid.

When Exdeath merged the worlds, Cid found himself stuck in the machinery of the Catapult, and Mid rushed to Crescent for help.[8] Mid met Krile, who related to Mid based on his relationship with his grandfather. When Mid explained to Krile that Cid had thrown himself into his work out of guilt at the way the world had become, Krile urged him to take good care of him.[9]

After the Light Warriors defeated Exdeath, Mid received a letter from Krile in which she told him what the others had gotten up to in the time since, and expressed she missed everyone.[10]

Several years later, Mid sees the demon Ra Devil raid his grandfather's grave. Watching in horror as the he removes Cid's brain from his body, Ra Devil pierces Mid through the heart and he dies on the spot. Unable to rest, he becomes a ghost, and befriends Prettz and Linaly, the descendant of his friend Bartz. With his help, they defeat Ra Devil, who has transformed into the god of oblivion, Deathgyunos, using the Crystals. In the end Mid retrieves Cid's brain from Deathgyunos's body and is able to pass over to the afterlife.

Appearance[]

Mid is a blond boy who wears round red glasses with yellow lenses and a long purple cloak and red shoes. While his portrait and Yoshitaka Amano artworks depict him with glasses, he does not wear them in his field sprite. His hair is cut into a bowl cut and he wears a gold choker with a large red orb.

Personality[]

Mid is a devoted researcher and scientist like his father, but shares a tendency to be reckless. This is seen when he becomes so immersed in his book at the Library of the Ancients that he is entirely unaware of the battle occuring behind him.[2]

Mid idolizes his grandfather, who taught him to be unafraid of failure and to always try again after being unsucccessful, and learning of his grandfather's depression greatly concerns him.[2] He continues to worry for Cid, seeing how Cid's guilt has affected him, while seeing that Cid is not to blame for the state of the world. Mid becomes close with Krile, relating to her due to her relationship with her grandfather, Galuf.[9]

Other appearances[]

Since Mid's introduction in Final Fantasy V, "Mid" has also become a recurring name for characters with some relation to their world's Cid: Mid from Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is the grandchild of a character named Cid Pollendina, Balthier's birth name is Ffamran mied Bunansa and his father is Cidolfus Demen Bunansa, Cid Garlond's father's name is "Midas", the Cid of Final Fantasy XI has a son named "Midras", Cid Sophiar of Final Fantasy XV had a late son named Mid who was the father of Cindy Aurum, and Midadol Telamon from Final Fantasy XVI is the daughter of Cidolfus Telamon. Though Mid Previa was the grandson of his Cid, most later Mids are their respective Cids' sons (or a daughter in Midadol's case) instead.
