Refine Mid-Level Magic from other Magic
Description
Mid Mag-RF (middle magic refiner) is a menu ability in Final Fantasy VIII that allows the player to create second tier spells from first tier spells; though the conversion rate is not amazing, second tier magic outclasses first tier magic outright. However, there are also often easier ways to get second tier spells. High Mag-RF is later learned by Alexander to make third tier spells from second tier spells.
Obtained[]
The Guardian Force Quezacotl learns Mid Mag-RF for 60 AP after mastering T Mag-RF. Quezacotl is Squall's starter GF that he has since the beginning of the game (inspect the Study Panel at the classroom). If the player removes Mid Mag-RF with Amnesia Greens, there is no way to get it back.
Mechanics[]
Using Mid Mag-RF in the Ability menu enables the player to make -ra spells from their base variants. The resultant spells are allocated to any party member who has space in their Magic inventory.
Spell | Refine Into |
---|---|
Fire | 5 = 1 Fira |
Blizzard | 5 = 1 Blizzara |
Thunder | 5 = 1 Thundara |
Cure | 5 = 1 Cura |
Use[]
Mid Mag-RF is only used to make the -ra versions of the three base elemental spell types, as well as the curative spell. Mid Mag-RF is a worthwhile ability to learn and use to convert any low level spells into their second incarnations, though the player may find it easier to simply make the second tier spells outright with the spell type's own refiner ability e.g. make Thundaras with T Mag-RF, the prerequisite ability for learning Mid Mag-RF, rather than convert Thunder spells. As the conversion ratio is 5:1, the player can only get 20 Thundaras from 100 Thunders with Mid Mag-RF, whereas they may be able to make more faster from Coral Fragments with T Mag-RF. However, Mid Mag-RF can still be good for needing no special items, only the readily available first tier spells, meaning that in a casual playthrough where the player may not engage with Triple Triad much, it is still a viable way of making second tier magic before enemies have them in their draw lists.
Once the player learns High Mag-RF, the player can further refine any mid tier spells into the high tier.
