A memory module containing the data of a demon capable of terrifying society. Used with a chthonian armlet.

Description

Mezu Drive is an accessory in "Episode INTERmission" in Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade that is only active when the equipper also has the chthonian armlet. With this set-up, the wearer deals more damage with abilities that expend ATB the lower their MP is. Mezu drive is the antithesis to the Gozu drive, which, when coupled with chthonian armlet, has the wearer deal more damage the more HP the wearer has.

Obtained[]

Mezu drive is obtained for defeating the Levrikon mini boss in Sector 7 Slums' Waste Disposal Area during "Main Pillar Maintenance" in Chapter 1, "Wutai's Finest".

Use[]

Chthonian Armlet with Mezu Drive from FFVIIR INTERmission

Chthonian Armlet active with Mezu Drive.

Chthonian armlet + a drive is the best way to boost character's damage, making it great for Yuffie. The armlet is obtained from defeating the Corneo Lackeys in "The Handoff". When used with Mezu drive, the equipper deals more damage the closer to empty their MP is. The equipper will never do less damage than they would if they did not have the chthonian armlet+drive equipped; the added damage is simply a bonus.

However, seeing that the effect is the same as with Gozu drive, the latter may be of more use, as having high HP is always beneficial, whereas being on low MP is more of a detriment. However, in hard mode restoring MP is only done via weapon passives and destroyable boxes with random loot, which eventually run out toward the end of Chapter 2, meaning the player may end up in a situation where Yuffie's MP is pretty much spent, anyway, meaning Mezu drive will always boost her damage.

Etymology[]

Ox-Head and Horse-Face are two guardians of the underworld in Chinese Buddhist mythology, called Gozu and Mezu in Japanese folklore. Both have the muscular bodies of men but heads of animals, giving them a monstrous appearance akin to oni. They are considered the close assistants of Yama, the Judge of the Dead, and whose duties range from being the first entities a dead soul would encounter upon entering the underworld to returning lost souls and hunting those who dare escape the judgment of the underworld.

The name thus complements that of chthonian armlet. The word chthonic or chthonian means "subterranean", and is used to describe deities of the underworld, or monstrous beings of primordial chaos, especially in the Ancient Greek religion. It is derived from the Ancient Greek word χθών (khthṓn) which means "ground", "soil", or "earth".
