Meteor-of-the-Six-FFXV

Blue glowing asteroid at the Disc of Cauthess.

Gladiolus: Barring delays, she should've arrived by now. Maybe even had herself a look at the Meteor.
Noctis: The Meteor of the Six?
Ignis: The same. Its heat is harnessed to power Lestallum.
—Party dialogue when heading to meet with Iris in Lestallum

Meteor of the Six, also known simply as the Meteor or Astral shard, is an asteroid that fell to Eos during the "age of the gods" in Final Fantasy XV. It remains a notable landmark in the Duscae region. The asteroid is blue glowing crystal whose spires reach out toward the sky. It emanates heat and the area around it is volcanic, and its shards act as an inexhaustible energy source.

Fragments of the asteroid are known as meteorshards. In Final Fantasy XV: Comrades, the player must collect them to power the power plant in Lestallum.

Almanac[]

Circular crater created when the Meteor crash-landed into the middle of the Mencemoor in the age of the gods. The impact shattered the earth, leaving a bowl-like basin that inspired the site's nickname.
The asteroid never hit the ground, however, as it was intercepted by the Archaean, who now slumbers with the rock upon his back. The round pits that pepper the Duscaen landscape are said to have been formed by bits of the Meteor that splintered off upon impact. One such meteorshard now serves as the primary energy source of the power plant in Lestallum, which converts the heat from the fragments into electricity.
The people of Duscae have a particular reverence for Titan—not only for shielding them from the Meteor, but for indirectly providing them with the energy that supports their lives as well. To this day, devout disciples still flock to the Disc, braving the treacherous terrain in order to pay homage to their patron saint.

Profile[]

According to pre-release information the Meteor is as old as Eos and has been there since the "beginning of time".[1] However, sources on the final game offer no timeline for its arrival, other than that it happened in the "age of the gods" (i.e. before the gods went to sleep). Duscae's stone arches and the lakes and ponds formed in craters are remnants of the impact.

The Meteor's impact site is known as the Disc of Cauthess. According to legend, the Astral god Titan caught the asteroid as it fell and is still holding it in his slumber. Whenever tremors emanate from the cauthess, people of Lestallum call it Titan's snoring. NPCs in Comrades posit that the gods themselves called down the Meteor. Lestallum and its EXINERIS Industries draw power from the still-active crystals to provide energy.

In the German localization of Final Fantasy XV Ardyn Izunia says Starscourge originated from the Meteor[note 1] during his soliloquy at the end of Chapter 13.[2] This is not stated outright in other versions, the Japanese version simply stating "a plague without remedy became widespread".

The Meteor disappears from the Disc of Cauthess after Prince Noctis forges a covenant with Titan. The energy plant in Lestallum is powered by meteorshards, and thus the populace has a favorable view of the Meteor, although the main crystal is rarely approached for the inhospitable area it is located in.

Large meteorshards are found in Perpetouss Keep where Niflheim has been conducting various experiments, although whether they involved the meteorshards is unknown. Whether Niflheim brought the shards there or built the keep around the shards is likewise unknown. During Adventurer from Another World Ixal use the meteorshards to summon a primal, the shard vanishing into the ether as the primal is called.

The asteroid is an allusion to Final Fantasy VII, from it being called the "Meteor", to the Meteor Publishing logo depicting it in a similar manner to the Meteor in the Final Fantasy VII logo FFVII logo, to the Meteor possibly having brought an alien parasite to the planet millennia ago that infects the local lifeforms.

FFXV-Astral-Shard

The Meteor was called "Astral shard" in 2014 trailers, in which the party was shown driving close by it with the Regalia. Ignis still calls it thusly in incidental dialogue in the final game.

The Meteor being a crystal likens it to other magical crystals from the series, the crystal being the series's main motif. While the Crystal of Lucis hearkens to the more modern manifestation of a Final Fantasy crystal as the representation of souls and life-force, the Meteor crystal could be seen as representing to the elemental crystals from the early series, whose effect on the land was more literal.

Gameplay[]

The player is tasked with salvaging meteorshards in Final Fantasy XV: Comrades. Magic Pots appear randomly in missions, and giving them an ingredient will cause the Magic Pot to gift meteorshards to the player.

Etymology[]

A meteor or "shooting star" is the visible streak of light from a meteoroid or micrometeoroid, heated and glowing from entering the Earth's atmosphere, as it sheds glowing material in its wake. Meteors rarely explode in the Earth's atmosphere. The term has become associated with quickness with the adjective "meteoric". In the context of myth and superstition, meteors and comets sighted in Ancient and Medieval Europe were once held as ill omen, said to be the message of the heavens' displeasure of man's affairs to herald grave catastrophes.

Pieces that withstand atmospheric ablation are known as meteorites, but the name of the spell in the series refers to the overall phenomenon.

Notes[]

Annotations[]

  1. Starscourge possibly originating from the Meteor is similar to the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles where Miasma is the eternal threat produced by the Meteor Parasite, brought to the world in a meteorite that landed centuries ago. Extraterrestrial calamities brought upon a meteorite impact is a recurring storyline in the Final Fantasy series: in Final Fantasy VII the virus was brought upon a meteorite 2,000 years ago and in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within the Phantoms are brought to Earth on the Leonid Meteor.
