Final Fantasy IV

Template:Sideicon The party first learns of Meteor from Tellah. Wishing to avenge his daughter, Anna, he seeks Meteor to kill Golbez. Tellah is searching for Meteor on Mount Ordeals where he encounters Cecil Harvey. The young mages Palom and Porom warn Tellah Meteor is too dangerous in his old age, but Tellah does not listen. At the summit, Kluya's spirit restores Tellah's memories, granting him all the spells he has forgotten, and teaching him Meteor. When the party returns to Mysidia, the Elder of Mysidia warns Tellah against Meteor, and implies the spell had been sealed away for some time for being too dangerous, but Tellah still does not listen.

Some time later in the Tower of Zot, Tellah claims his chance at revenge. Assailing Golbez with the strongest spells he knows to no avail, Tellah casts Meteor. The spell weakens Golbez, forcing him to flee, and shatters his telepathic control of Kain Highwind. The effort to cast Meteor drains what is left of Tellah's life force, and he perishes soon after.

During the battle against Zemus, Golbez and Fusoya combine their powers to cast Twin Meteor (Wメテオ, W Meteo?), originally titled W.Meteo in the SNES and PlayStation translations, killing him. When Zemus is reborn as Zeromus, Golbez and Fusoya use the normal Meteor spell on him to no effect, and Zeromus counters with his own Meteor spell and nearly kills them.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years

Gameplay

Final Fantasy IV

Tellah casts Meteor ffiv ios

Tellah casts Meteor in the iOS release.

In battle, Meteor has a casting time of 10 and costs 99 MP to cast. It is the most expensive spell in the game, apart from the Twincast option Ultima in the 3D remake version. It ignores magic defense and split damage, as well as Shell and Reflect making it the most powerful offensive spell in the game with a base power of 800 in the non-3D release, and 250 otherwise. Although in the 3D remake release Ultima is stronger. When Tellah acquires the spell, he only has 90 MP and cannot gain more normally. In some releases, a Soma Drop or Augments can be used to increase his maximum MP.

Rydia learns Meteor at Level 60 (Level 80 in the 3D remakes). Fusoya knows every spell in the game, including Meteor, and his maximum MP is 190. So he will be able to cast it. Palom learns Meteor at Level 50 (55 in the 3D release) and by equipping Palom and Porom with the Twin Stars, their Twin command will cast Twin Meteor instead of the usual Comet or Pyroblast, which has higher power than Meteor and does not consume MP while having the longest charge time of any abilities in the game. They are only able to do this in the Advance and Complete Collection releases.

Although the Twin Meteor originally appeared as a normal Meteor spell with a different name. For the 3D remake, it has slightly different graphics and breaks the damage limit by doing 99,999 points of damage to Zemus. It's also classified as a Black Magic spell in the 3D remakes.

Zeromus will cast Meteor during the final battle when at critical health (as his first attack when below 30,000 HP and every third turn thereafter in the 3D remake, and every other turn when below 12,000 HP in the other versions).

In all releases except for the DS/iOS/Android versions, Meteor and Twin Meteor are Holy-elemental spells. In the 3D remake, Meteor and Twin Meteor were change to be a non-elemental spell.

Etymology

A meteor or "shooting star" is the visible streak of light from a meteoroid or micrometeoroid, heated and glowing from entering the Earth's atmosphere, as it sheds glowing material in its wake. Meteors rarely explode in the Earth's atmosphere. The term has become associated with quickness with the adjective "meteoric". In the context of myth and superstition, meteors and comets sighted in Ancient and Medieval Europe were once held as ill omen, said to be the message of the heavens' displeasure of man's affairs to herald grave catastrophes.

Pieces that withstand atmospheric ablation are known as meteorites, but the name of the spell in the series refers to the overall phenomenon.

Therefore, the use of the term meteor is incorrect in Final Fantasy IV as pieces that withstand ablation from atmospheric entry and impact with the ground are called a meteorites rather than meteors.

Trivia

  • Twin Meteor was originally translated as W.Meteo in the SNES and PlayStation translations of Final Fantasy IV. With Holy censored to White lead some to assumed that the abbreviated W in W.Meteo stand for White Meteor, a combination of the most powerful white and black magic spells. In Japanese, the letter W often stands for "double".
  • Tellah's search for the forbidden black magic Meteor alludes to Minwu's search for the forbidden white magic Ultima. Both spells are located in a sacred place near a town called Mysidia, and both characters are ultimately killed by association with the magic.
