Metem is a character in Final Fantasy XIV, introduced in the expansion Dawntrail. He is the head of strategic management at Ascension Arcadia in Solution Nine. He provides the commentary in-game in the Arcadion series of raids.
History[]
After Alexandria lost both King Zoraal Ja and Queen Sphene, the population showed sadness and uncertainty and so it was decided they would resume the Ascension Arcadia Championship to cheer up the people. Metem metthe Warrior of Light while recruiting a new competitor for the Championship and invited them to join the competition. Metem explained that each fighter in the Championship employs feral souls to increase their strength, and the three levels of the competition are divided by the power of the souls used: light-heavyweight, cruiserweight, and heavyweight. The aim is to climb the rankings by defeating the respective champions of each level and become the great champion. As Warrior of Light did not use a regulator and disapproved of the use of souls for entertainment, to ensure that the matches were fair, Metem asked the Warrior of Light to use the souls of seven fighters to support the battle. If the Warrior of Light was victorious, Metem promised to release the souls used. The Warrior of Light decided to take part to free the souls stored in the repository.[2]
Metem introduced the first opponent, Black Cat, explaining she used the soul of Cath Palug, a legendary feline said to have fought against an ancient hero. After the Warrior of Light returned victorious, Metem explained the history of the Ascension Arcadia Championship, and the Warrior discovered that the competition existed long before the Turali people arrived in Alexandria. Black Cat interrupted the conversation, frustrated at having lost. She was interested in learning more about the Warrior of Light, who allowed Black Cat to watch them during the championship.[3]
While Metem was making the arrangements for the next match, he suggested that the Warrior of Light find a "second", someone to support by collecting information about the opponents and giving advice on training. Black Cat, who was there watching the Warrior of Light, volunteered for the position, as she would no longer be able to take part in the championship for a while due to her defeat.[4]
Wicked Thunder threatening the Warrior of Light.
After the Warrior of Light faced and defeated the current champion of the division, the Brute Bomber, Metem held a coronation ceremony for the new champion. The Brute Bomber interrupted the event by invading the stage, claiming the Warrior's victory was a hoax since they fought with seven others. The Brute Bomber insisted they settle this one-on-one and activated his feral soul. He charged at the Warrior of Light, but before he could hit them, the Brute Bomber was knocked out by a bolt of lightning of Eutrope, the Wicked Thunder. Eutrope threatened to take the Warrior of Light's soul, which Metem interpreted as a challenge. However, Metem had no authority to allow such a duel, as Wicked Thunder's license had been revoked after her disappearance. The voice of the President of Ascension Arcadia reverberated in the stadium to sanction the confrontation.[5]
After the Warrior of Light defeated Wicked Thunder, Metem paid a visit to Yaana's gym to see how they were doing after their sister's reappearance. Before Metem showed up, Eutrope had already paid a visit before, and had revealed the truth about the immortals of Ascension Arcadia: by using transfiguration too much they begin to suffer with psychonekrosis and are taken away to a secret facility, where their regulators are removed and they are kept in confinement until they die. Metem claimed that despite his position at Arcadion, he had never heard anything like that and only commented with such enthusiasm because he thought the fighters were safe. He cautioned Yaana that they could not just reveal the truth to the public, since the President's authority was too great; they would only put the fighters and themselves in danger, and what was to stop the President from covering it all up. Metem claimed their only recourse was for the Warrior of Light to win the tournament and become the grand champion. That way, the Warrior could release all the souls from soul repository, eliminating the danger of psychonekrosis altogether.[6]
