Mental Break (メンタルブレイク, Mentaru Bureiku?), also known Shear, is a Knight ability that reduces the target's Magic Defense. In some games, it instead reduces Magic Power.

Description

Mental Break is one of Steiner's Sword Arts. It halves a target's Magic Defense, costs 8 MP to use, and can be learned for 45 AP from the Ice Brand and Gold Helm. It has a 50% accuracy, but can be used repeatedly.

Final Fantasy X[edit | edit source]

Mental Break is a skill found on Auron's section of the Sphere Grid. It costs 12 MP to perform and damages an enemy with a chance to apply the Armor Break status. It can be taught to an aeon with four Shining Thorns.

Unlike the Mental Break skill, Auron's Banishing Blade Overdrive has a 100% chance of inflicting the status.

Final Fantasy X-2[edit | edit source]

Mental Break is a Swordplay ability that damages one enemy and lowers its Magic Defense by 2 levels. It is learned by the Warrior dressphere for 30 AP after learning Magic Break, and costs 4 MP to use.

Final Fantasy XII[edit | edit source]

Shear in Final Fantasy XII.

Shear is a Technick that reduces an enemy's Magick Resist. It can be performed repeatedly on the same enemy.

In the original version, Shear lowers Magick Resist by 10%, has a charge time of 45, and a base accuracy of 33%. It can be purchased in Rabanastre, Nalbina, and Jahara for 3,600 gil, and licensed for 35 LP.

In the Zodiac versions, Shear lowers Magick Resist by 10% plus 1, has a charge time of 40, and a base accuracy of 70%. Shear is found in a treasure in The Zeviah Span within the Barheim Passage. It requires 50 LP, and is learned by Foebreaker, Archer and Time Battlemage, although the Time Battlemage must acquire the license for Zeromus first. When Vossler joins as a guest, he can also use Shear. Thus, the player can get access to the technick early, and take on some hunts with Vossler to make use of it, such as the Rocktoise.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift[edit | edit source]

Mind Crush is an ability that deals damage and lowers the target's Resistance. It is learned by the Raptor from the Falchion for 250 AP.

Mental Break is a three-star Combat ability. It deals damage equal to 1.7 times the base physical damage, and reduces the target's RES by 30% for 15 seconds. It has a charge time of 1.65 seconds, grants 60 Soul Break points, and requires Power, Ice, and Non-Elemental Orbs to craft.

Mental Breakdown is a four-star Support ability. It deals damage equal to 2.1 times the base physical damage, and reduces the target's RES by 50% for 15 seconds. It has a charge time of 1.65 seconds, grants 60 Soul Break points, and requires Greater Power, Greater Ice, and Greater Non-Elemental Orbs to craft.

Scale Strip is the job level 4 ability for the Pirate. It deals the same damage as a conventional attack to one target, and for four turns, lowers the target's magical defense by 25%. The lower limit for M.Def is 75%. It costs 9 MP to use.
