The Medusa (メデューサ, Medūsa?), also known as the Scylla, is a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series, first appearing in the original Final Fantasy. As with the myth from which it is derived, it typically appears as a humanoid woman with snakes for hair, whose Gaze can inflict petrification.

The Medusa appears as an enemy encountered in the Citadel of Trials and Mirage Tower. Its Gaze can inflict Stone, and it can inflict Poison with its basic attacks.
Final Fantasy III[]
The Medusa appears as a boss encountered in the Tower of Owen. It was sent by Xande to destroy the tower, which would in turn cause the Floating Continent to crash to the world below. Its Stare can inflict Petrify, and it can also cast -ra tier elemental magic.
Final Fantasy IV[]
The Medusa appears as an enemy encountered in the Tower of Babil and the Underworld. Its Stone Touch can inflict Gradual Petrify. It can drop the Stoneblade and Medusa Arrow, themselves capable of inflicting Petrify.
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years[]
The Medusa returns as an enemy encountered in the Mist Cliff, Challenge Dungeon, and True Moon.
Final Fantasy IV -Interlude-[]
The Medusa returns as an enemy encountered in the Tower of Babil.
Final Fantasy V[]
The Medusa appears as an enemy exclusive to the Advance and Matrix Software releases, encountered in the Sealed Temple. It has a variety of abilities capable of inflict Petrify, Confuse, Paralyze, and Sleep.
Final Fantasy XI[]
The Medusa is a lamia notorious monster. It can be encountered leading the Undead Swarm in Al Zahbi and Bhaflau Thickets during Besieged, and can also appear randomly in Arrapago Reef. When defeated in the Reef it grants the title "Gorgonstone Sunderer" and may drop the Medusa's Armlet and Mercenary's Dastanas, and will temporarily stop appearing during Besieged.

The Medusa appears as a boss encountered in the Volcano. It can inflict Petrify, Paralyze, Poison, and Confusion.
Final Fantasy Adventure[]
The Medusa appears as a boss encountered in the Cave of Medusa (Shifting Sands). The mother of Davias, Sumo and Amanda seek her out in order to obtain her tears, which are needed to lift the curse on Amanda's brother Lester. While victorious, Amanda is bitten during the battle and begins turning into a Medusa herself, forcing Sumo to kill her before she can fully turn.
