Mauwyl Mudkirk is a non-player character in Final Fantasy XIV. He is a woodcutter from the Crystarium and a friend of Tolas. Mauwyl appears during sidequests in Lakeland.

History[]

While working making a wood delivery for the Ostall Imperative, the sin eaters attacked. Mauwyl remained in hiding and witnessed the Warrior of Darkness in battle from afar. Eventually, when he met the Warrior of Darkness in person, Mauwyl asked for help to find out what was bothering Tolas, a friend of Mauwyl's and a member of the Crystarium guard. They discovered that Tolas was the only survivor of his regiment during the recent sin eater attack, and Tolas was racked with guilt and considered himself a coward for prioritizing his own safety over the lives of his men.[1]

After revealing the story, Tolas declared his intention to return to the battlefield to atone for his failures, an idea that Mauwyl quickly rejected, insisting that his friend take a break from his duties until he is fully recovered. Tolas reluctantly agreed and went to his commander to formally make the request.[2]

While in a supply caravan on its way to the Imperative, the caravan was ambushed by a sin eater shortly after departing Radisca's Round. Mauwyl was forced to flee in the opposite direction to the rest of the group and went missing. Concerned for his friend, Tolas vowed to return and join the search effort as soon as possible.[2] Tolas searched for Mauwyl in the forest, and when he found his friend being attacked by a sin eater, he regained his will to fight and drew his sword. After everything was resolved, Tolas and Mauwyl thanked the Warrior of Darkness for their help, and Tolas returned to his post.[3]

Upon meeting again with the Warrior of Darkness, Tolas had resumed his duties with the guard and was about to leave for the Crystarium to place a supply order with Mauwyl. Tolas invited the Warrior of Darkness to accompany him on the journey so that they could clear the roads to the city of menacing beasts. The two made their way without difficulty, Tolas no longer showing fear when wielding his sword, and Mauwyl used stink bombs to scare off the enemies.[4]

On the way they found the guardsman Nielden under attack. Although they defeated the monster, Tolas suffered a minor injury. Nielden insisted they go to Fort Jobb where Callea could tend to the wound. Tolas was impressed with the effectiveness of the ointments made by Callea and asked to buy a batch to take to the Imperative. Callea explained that she barely had enough ingredients to make potions for Fort Jobb. Tolas proposed that she ask the woodcutter Mauwyl to obtain the necessary herbs. Though reluctant to impose on the kindness of strangers, Callea agreed to accompany him to the Crystarium to make the request in person. Upon hearing Tolas's proposal, Mauwyl happily agreed, and all present rejoiced in what was sure to be a beneficial arrangement for all parties involved.[4]
