O mournful voice of creation! Send unto me a creature of the abyss, my thrall to command, that I may smite mine enemies!

Masked Mage

The Masked Mage is a non-playable character from Final Fantasy XIV. A lower-ranked Ascian, he serves as the main antagonist in the early portions of A Realm Reborn, stirring up conflict in the Black Shroud, La Noscea, or Thanalan depending on the player's starting class. His name is never learned before his demise.

History[]

The Masked Mage's exact role varies depending on which city-state the adventurer began their journey in, which is in turn dictated by their starting class. Regardless of the region, he was defeated with the aid of a member of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, and with his last words confirmed the Ascians' involvement in Eorzea's recent troubles, leading the assisting Scion to explain their nature to the adventurer.

Limsa Lominsa[]

If the adventurer began as a Marauder or Arcanist, they encountered the Masked Mage in La Noscea. Trailing Sevrin at the behest of Staelwyrn, they found him encountering a coalition of Serpent Reavers, who had apparently entered into an agreement with the Masked Mage. At their signal, he conjured a golem to attack Sevrin and the adventurer, the latter able to defeat the golem, much to the Mage's shock.

Later, after the adventurer helped the Yellowjackets fend off a Serpent Reaver attack on Swiftperch, the Masked Mage confronted them in person, summoning a voidsent to attack the adventurer. Y'shtola Rhul arrived to assist in defeating both the voidsent and the Mage, who lamented his defeat at the hands of "mere mortals".

Gridania[]

If the adventurer began as a Lancer, Archer, or Conjurer, they encountered the Masked Mage in the Black Shroud. A Hearer attempting to return the Spirithold to the elementals was attacked by monsters, prompting the adventurer to come to their rescue. While attempting to aid the Hearer, the Masked Mage conjured a golem to attack them. The adventurer defeated the golem, much to the Mage's shock.

Later, after the adventurer helped the Wood Wailers defeat a contingent of Ixal attempting to summon Garuda, the Masked Mage confronted them, summoning a voidsent to attack the adventurer. Papalymo Totolymo and Yda Hext arrived to assist them in defeating both the voidsent and the Mage, who lamented his defeat at the hands of "mere mortals".

Ul'dah[]

If the adventurer began as a Gladiator, Pugilist, or Thaumaturge, they encountered the Masked Mage in Thanalan. When Wystan discovered a ruined city and attempted to make a profit off it, a contingent of Brass Blades under orders from Lolorito Nanarito made to kill him Wystan and his prospectors, intending to prevent him from amassing enough money to change the laws of Ul'dah. The Masked Mage, observing the scene in secret, conjured a golem to attack the group, which all parties assumed to be Lolorito's doing. The adventurer, having come to the site at Wystan's behest, defeated the golem to protect him, much to the Mage's shock.

Later, after the adventurer helped the Sultansworn retrieve the crown of Ul'dah from a band of thieves, the Masked Mage confronted them, summoning a voidsent to attack the adventurer. Thancred Waters arrived to assist them in defeating both the voidsent and the Mage, who lamented his defeat at the hands of "mere mortals".

Characteristics[]

The Masked Mage wears the black robe typical of Ascians, along with a black mask over his face signifying his status as a lower-ranked Ascian.
