Life Under Barrington

Shortly after Marach was born, Grand Duke Barrington came to his village in order to take the two children to use their powers for his purposes. When the village leaders would not cooperate, Barrington had the village razed, and kidnapped the children. Marach grew up thinking that Barrington has saved him and Rapha from their village, and felt indebted, joined the Khamja, an elite assassination team, in the Fifty Years' War. During Marach's service under Barrington, he was unaware of his master's cruel treatment of Rapha which eventually culminated in Barrington raping her. Rapha tried to convince Marach of what was going on, but Marach refused to believe it.

Tension With Rapha

One day, Marach came across Isilud Tengille who had kidnapped Alma Beoulve. He captured Isilud and took him and his prisoner to Barrington's stronghold of Riovanes Castle. Barrington sent word to Isilud's father Folmarv Tengille, leader of the Church of Glabados Knights Templar, indicating that he wanted to meet with Folmarv. He then assigned Marach to deal with Alma's brother Ramza. Marach informed Ramza that Alma was being held at Riovanes Castle and then set a trap for him at a town along the road. Rapha was supposed to help him, but as Ramza approached, Rapha once again tried to convince Marach of the truth.

Again, Marach refused to listen, and when Ramza arrived, Rapha defected. Marach and the Riovanes soldiers attacked both Ramza and Rapha, but Ramza drove them off. Marach then returned to Riovanes Castle, and was there when Formarv arrived. Marach brought Isilud out and watched as Folmarv struck him across the face. Then, word arrived that Ramza was approaching the castle, and Barrington sent Marach to deal with him. At the castle entrance, Marach once again engaged Ramza and Rapha in battle. During the battle, Rapha realized she could not convince Marach of the truth and teleported away. Marach followed suit.

Battle on the Roof

Rapha confronted Barrington atop the roof of the castle. Marach listened in unseen as Rapha levied her accusations against Barrington and aimed her weapon at him. Fear prevented her from firing, and Barrington gloated at what appeared to be an easy victory, revealing what he did to her. Marach, realizing the truth, made his presence known and demanded to know if what he had just heard was true. Barrington pulled a gun and fired at Rapha, but Marach knocked her out of the way, taking the bullet himself.

Suddenly, Barrington was thrown off the roof by the Ultima Demon Lettie disguised as a human girl, and a battle erupted between Ramza's forces and those of Marquis Elmdore. Ramza was victorious, and following the battle, Rapha mourned the loss of her brother. The Taurus Zodiac Stone suddenly reacted, but rather then turning Marach into a Lucavi, it revived him. After searching the castle for Alma, the group realized that she was now in the hands of Folmarv, and Marach joined Ramza on his quest to rescue his sister.
