Maqui is a character in Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2. He is a member of NORA, a vigilante group based in Bodhum. Maqui is the group's mechanic and his ability to transform junk into workable machines provides NORA with income. He prefers to stay in the sidelines what it comes to all out battles, where the group's powerhouses Snow and Gadot tend to take center stage. In Final Fantasy XIII-2 it is revealed that Maqui operates a shop called Lenora's Garage; this is a shop the player can use in the Retail Network in Final Fantasy XIII.

Datalog[]

Final Fantasy XIII[]

Maqui joined the ranks of NORA out of his admiration for Snow. He loves to tinker with machinery and serves as the group's mechanic. His talent for taking junk and using it to upgrade machines has provided NORA with a source of income.

One day Maqui wants to be a reliable, heroic type like Snow, but he still has a long way to go.

Final Fantasy XIII-2[]

NORA is a vigilante group of young do-gooders from the Cocoon town of Bodhum. No strangers to fending for themselves, the group went on to found the settlement of New Bodhum in the harsh environment of Pulse.

NORA consists of four core members: the intimidating Gadot, Snow's right-hand man; the amiable mood maker, Yuj; the mechanical genius, Maqui; and the NORA House resident chef, Lebreau.

Snow, NORA's founding member, is presently away from New Bodhum.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

In-game render.

Maqui has blond hair, blue eyes, and round face. He wears goggles on his head, and a pair of headphones he uses to communicate with his fellow NORA members. His black jacket has pink sleeves with a red symbol across the side. He wears khaki pants with large, brown hip pouches and a pair of silver and purple shoes.

Personality[]

Maqui has kind of a boyish personality, and a more cheerful and upbeat disposition compared to others in NORA. He was an introvert until he met Snow Villiers, whom he now idolizes, and emulates in the way he dresses.[2] Maqui and Snow act like brothers. Maqui and his best friend, Yuj, are the youngest members of NORA. He is also good friends with Snow's fiancée, Serah Farron. Despite his young age, Maqui is a skilled mechanic. He is not fond of his height.

In a Dengeki PlayStation interview, character designed Nao Ikeda described Maqui as such:[2]

[Maqui] has a history where he was an introvert and always stayed home until Snow came to pull him out. Since then he started to respect Snow greatly. That's why his outfit is styled like Snow more than other members. For example Maqui has a brassard on to copy how Snow's left sleeve is like, and his gloves are similar also. He is seen in many layers because he wants to hide his slim body that he finds embarrassing, compared to Snow's powerful and muscular body. His pair of headphones are used for radio transmissions between Nora members, and his goggles and tool satchel is his identification as the proud Nora mechanic.

Maqui

Maqui at the Hanging Edge.

Maqui lives in the seaside town of Bodhum, and is part of Team NORA alongside Snow, Gadot, Lebreau and Yuj. He secretly runs Lenora's Garage to make a profit with his inventions.[3] When all Bodhum residents were to be Purged due to the discovery of a Pulse fal'Cie at the Pulse Vestige ruins nearby, team NORA took up arms and followed the Purge train in hopes of liberating the Purgees, as well as helping Snow rescue Serah, who was trapped inside the Vestige. They derail the train in the Hanging Edge.

Final Fantasy XIII Gaiden Shōsetsu: Yumemiru Mayu, Akatsuki ni Otsu elaborates on what happened to NORA after Snow left for the Pulse Vestige. NORA guided surviving Purgees to take refuge in a crevice in the ground. After breaking through PSICOM's defenses they escaped the Hanging Edge and hid inside an ancient Pulsian building inserted between the layers of Cocoon's outer shell during its construction. It was a large vestige that "shouldn't" exist, but it was the perfect place for the Purge survivors to lay low and wait out the army's search efforts. Gadot led a combat team to ensure everyone's safety and food and supplies were sent through Maqui's shop, Lenora's Garage.

Maqui Hanging Edge

Maqui at the Hanging Edge.

By hacking the Sanctum's information channels through his own network, Maqui tapped into a live feed and projected a hologram of a broadcast from Palumpolum being captured by a military surveillance camera. The footage depicted a plaza turned into a war zone as a pillar of ice conjured by magic froze everything. NORA recognized the Pulse l'Cie from the footage as their leader, Snow. Having been worried about him since the Pulse Vestige plummeted into Lake Bresha, the news of his survival bring relief to NORA who begin planning their next step, as Snow's appearance was the sign they needed to build a resistance movement to help him. As the Sanctum's troops are concentrated around Palumpolum, leaving holes in the security around the Hanging Edge, NORA and the refugees leave their shelter and set out for Eden, the capital of Cocoon and the Sanctum's seat of power.

Maqui hacks into the Cocoon broadcast system to let Aoede, a reporter who has been tagging along with NORA since the Purge, publicize the truth of the Sanctum, Purge and the fal'Cie to the masses. René, Maqui's old classmate, has discovered the fal'Cie's true goal from Cid Raines, and contacts Maqui to explain the situation. René plans to use her hacking skills to stabilize Cocoon's artificial gravity system in preparation for the planetoid's fall, putting all their faith in the Pulse l'Cie to make a miracle happen and save Cocoon. She sends him instructions for her control program along with the passcode from Raines on how to access Cocoon's main system.

Gadot and Marqui

While aiding Snow and the other Pulse l'Cie via the Retail Network, Maqui and the other NORA members meet them in Eden. Even if Snow is a l'Cie, they remain loyal to their leader, and work on evacuating the citizens while Snow's party heads on to find Orphan, the fal'Cie that sustains Cocoon.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Fragments Before[]

After Cocoon's fall many move to Gran Pulse, and NORA helps build New Bodhum on the coast. Maqui continues to work as a mechanic and spends most of his time tinkering with new inventions in his workshop beyond the village.

Final Fantasy XIII-2[]

XIII-2 NORAMemebers

Maqui in New Bodhum.

Maqui, Gadot, Yuj, and Lebreau defend New Bodhum when monsters attack it. When Serah, Mog, and Noel head to the Meteorite Impact Site, Maqui notes the plants grew so quickly, but with Serah and Noel concludes that different timelines overlap New Bodhum.

The next day, Rhett, a student of Serah's, stole Snow's engagement necklace from Maqui as he was polishing it in his workshop. Lebreau catches Maqui, Gadot and Yuj eavesdropping on Serah and Noel as they are about to leave using a Time Gate.

Final Fantasy XIII: Reminiscence -tracer of memories-[]

Nora-Polaroid

A photograph of NORA.

NORA members' souls found their way to the new world where they were reincarnated and established a restaurant, the "Nora House". One day, a reporter investigating the stories of people having memories of a past life in another world visits the restaurant and orders the Nora Special. The taste triggers a flood of memories, and the reporter recalls her past life: she was Aoede, a reporter caught up in the Purge who helped expose Sanctum's lies by airing Purge footage with the help of Maqui's broadcast hacks. The members of NORA remember Aoede and Lebreau tells her where to find Serah.
