Mr. Manson, also known as Pops, is a character in Final Fantasy VII Remake Trace of Two Pasts. He is a gang leader of the Manson Crew and the owner of a business named Sector 8 Steamed Buns in the Sector 8 slums of Midgar. Sector 8 Steamed Buns employed Tifa Lockhart during her recovery in Midgar, after Rakesh Oranye set Tifa up with a job with Manson in order to pay his debts.

History[]

Mr. Manson ran his legitimate business, the Sector 8 Steamed Buns, for approximately forty years.[1][note 1] The business used his mother's secret recipe in making the buns.[3]

The Manson Crew's territory was located in Container Row of the Sector 8 slums.[4] At times, Manson's team was directly in contact with the Shinra Electric Power Company, able to clear up scuffles that took place there.[5] Manson's team would also source ingredients for Sector 8 Steamed Buns. The crew received 30% of all sales from the business for this, while Manson himself received 20%.[1] Prior to Tifa, the previous employee for the business had been able to push 1,000 buns a day.[6] The business was open every day other than Wednesday, as Wednesday was when Manson would conduct gang work, collecting debts.[7]

At some point, Rakesh gambled his mother, Dr. Dhamini Oranye's money on chocobo races. This put him heavily in debt to Mr. Manson, forcing Dr. Oranye to greatly overcharge patients in order to help pay off the debt.[7] One of these employees was Tifa, who was discharged from Dr. Oranye's clinic in December 0002, and overcharged. Rakesh set her up to live in Container Row and work for Sector 8 Steamed Buns.[7]

Manson hired Tifa based on her appearance, believing her looks would bring in customers. He expected 500 buns a day sold initially,[6] but believed she could sell 1,500 a day, as her looks would attract customers outside of the breakfast, lunch, and dinner rushes.[8] Tifa's first day was poor, as she made buns poorly and lacked the stamina to make the buns fast enough to customers, causing Pops to send her home that day.[9] However, he noted she was able to retain customers despite making buns at an unusually slow pace, and she eventually began to improve her performance with his advice.[8]

While Manson did not condone Rakesh's overcharging Tifa during this time, he did not speak out against it due to how successful she was for the business.[7] Manson was aware of Tifa's connections to Avalanche, but did not out her, instead passing on advice to her that she could pass onto them. When Tifa admitted her intention to quit once her debts were paid, Manson did not stop her, instead aiming for selling 2,000 buns a day to pay the debts faster.[10]

Tifa, with Barret Wallace, eventually walked in on Manson collecting debts from Rakesh, where Manson revealed that he was in on Rakesh's plan and simply did not want to lose Tifa as a business partner. Tifa in turn said that she enjoyed the work and would have done it voluntarily had he not deceived him. Dr. Oranye forgave Tifa's debts after being caught, and Tifa then left the row.[7]

Characteristics[]

Manson is a small, old, pale-looking man. As Pops, he wears a bright red shirt and matching red trousers. He has dark hair peppered with silver.[6]

Manson is blunt and harsh with words. Though he normally is stern, he has a lighthearted and jovial side, as seen when talking about his mother's recipe.[11] Manson also had some misogynistic tendencies, hiring women based on looks,[8] in his first interaction with her, he said she "passed" based on her looks and when thinking of a street name for her, gazed at her chest.[6] Despite this, he was a very supportive partner, passing on warnings to pass onto Avalanche knowing her connections with them, and helping her pay off her debts fasted, despite knowing it would cause her to quit sooner.[10] Tifa noted that though he was blunt, he did not seem like a bad person.[8]

Notes[]

Annotations[]

  1. Though an exact date for Mr. Manson founding Sector 8 Steamed Buns is not given, it is likely he founded it close to 1976 when residents first began emigrating to the slums.[2] This would put it close to 40 years prior to 0002, when Tifa arrived.
