Mamool Ja [məˈmuːl ˌdʒɑː] is the name given to both a nation and its people in Final Fantasy XIV. They are a race originating from Tural, the western continent. The Mamool Ja are most commonly spotted selling their mercenary services on the isle of Vylbrand. They are but recently arrived on Eorzea's shores, and much about these beastmen remains the subject of rumor and hearsay.[1]
Characteristics[]
Appearance[]
The nation of Mamool Ja is comprised of a number of distinctly related tribes, each of which exhibit distinct physical characteristics. The Hoobigo are marked by light-brown scales and a longer comb than their kin, and their brute strength often places them in the ranks of melee infantry. In contrast, the large-eyed Boonewa are born with deep reservoirs of aether, and these natural spellcasters are soon identified by the blue-green tinge of their scales. Lastly, there are the mottled Doppro, whose bloodline produces skilled beast handlers and cavalry riders.[1]
A more rare sight among Mamool Ja are the two-headed variants, that are born from Hoobigo and Boonewa parents. These Mamool Ja are way larger in size and their scale color is a combination of Hoobigo and Boonewa. The right head is that of a Hoobigo and left head is that of Boonewa.
Society and culture[]
The Mamool Ja leader, who rules all three clans, is known as the Autarch. The Mamool Ja homeland is the jungle of Yak T'el in southern Tural, where their largest settlement is named Mamook. However many now live in the city of Tuliyollal alongside Tural's other races, after the city's establishment eighty years ago by Gulool Ja Ja.
Though not expressly forbidden, the diverse people of the Mamool Ja seldom marry outside their own tribes. This unspoken rule is broken, however, when members of different tribes are wed during the observance of certain religious ceremonies. Such unions occasionally result in two-headed offspring, and these "blessed siblings" are groomed for leadership from the moment they are born. It is kept secret, however, that the majority of two-headed Mamool Ja fetuses are unviable and stillborn, dying in the egg. As a result, Mamool Ja greatly pressure surviving blessed siblings to excel in all things and if they fall short, then they are banished from Mamook, leading to a great deal of emotional stress.
Upon reaching maturity, two-headed Mamool Ja take command of a number of their single-headed kin and head out to form their own warbands. These warbands endlessly seek to outdo one another on the field of battle, in a contest over who will next sit the throne of the Autarch. Rather than simply as a means to earn wealth, Mamool Ja practice of hiring themselves out as mercenaries also appears to play an important role in this display of military prowess.
The warriors of the Mamool Ja built a reputation as blades-for-hire, and have several well-established mercenary bands. Drawn by the scent of conflicts that flared following the Calamity, the beastmen crossed the sea to Eorzea to ply their opportunistic trade, a service of which the Kobolds have taken full advantage.[1] One such mercenary group is the Silverscales.
The Mamool Ja outside of Mamook are far more reasonable and open-minded compared to those living in Mamook, who have long desired to see the Mamool Ja ascend as the dominant race in Tural, looking down upon outsiders as a result. However, this behavior is born out of desperation rather than ambition as the natural landscape of Mamook make it a daily struggle to live comfortably, thus viewing the blessed siblings as their only hope to change their fortunes. Even Gulool Ja Ja's rise as Dawnservant and his efforts in uniting Tural were used by the Mamook elders as proof of the blessed siblings' necessity, completely and willfully ignoring Gulool Ja Ja's virtuous character and the fact that he didn't unite Tural alone. In fact, Gulool Ja Ja himself disapproves of Mamook's dependence on the blessed siblings as he sought to understand the numerous peoples of Tural and their cultures, treating them equally as he reigned. Only those who willingly left Mamook see the error in these views and have come see the "hope" of the blessed siblings as shameful. In truth, the Mamool Ja of Mamook feel a great sense of guilt and shame over their actions in cultivating the blessed siblings and do wish for something better but due to their traditions and desperation, they feel that there is no alternative. It was only after Wuk Lamat and her allies managed to find a way for the people of Mamool Ja to thrive in their land without the need of the blessed siblings that they began to feel hopeful again and have begun to be more open to change and interact with outsiders.
Gameplay[]
The Mamool Ja are a recurring enemy found primarily in La Noscea around Bronze Lake. They also appear in The Wanderer's Palace (Hard). In the storyline, a band of Mamool Ja mercenaries known as the Silverscales led by their leader Manxome Molaa Ja Ja have taken over the Wanderer's Palace to have their stronghold while butchering the resident Tonberries. The Adventurer manages to drive out the Silverscales while defeating Molaa Ja Ja as the two-headed Mamool Ja is finished off by the Tonberries.
As Dawntrail takes place in Tural, Mamool Ja feature prominently; they appear in several instanced duties as both allies and enemies, primarily using the Viper job, in particular Gulool Ja Ja and his son, Zoraal Ja.
