Battle[]
The malboro's Acid attacks can inflict Poison, but its most deadly attack is Bad Breath, which will inflict a number of debuffs, including Toad and Sleep, rendering the character useless. When it opens its mouth wide, ready to swallow someone, it can be targeted, pressuring it.
Any combination of Cloud, Barret, Tifa, and Aerith can be used for the battle.
Strategy[]
Though Cleansing Materia is helpful it is not essential. The malboro has no elemental weaknesses or resistances, so for spellcasting, Lightning Materia is best for the guaranteed hit. Equipping a Refocus materia is helpful, and Enemy Skill Materia should be equipped on any character that will tank Bad Breath up front to learn the ability. If bringing the enemy skill materia, its abilities may also come to use, such as Spirit Siphon for any close range attackers.
When choosing a team, it is important to balance roles to have a character with high HP who can tank malboro up front, a mobile melee attacker who can attack malboro from behind, and a third to provide support to the others. Cloud works well in any role, and if used should fill a gap in the team. Barret excels in tanking damage, and can otherwise provide supportive spells or supplemental physical damage. Tifa excels in melee damage, and her mobility and her ability to increase stagger bonus damage make her an excellent choice in a melee role. Though spellcasting is not a requirement for this battle, Aerith can provide excellent support from a range, and by using magic with Arcane Ward, her spell damage can still be very effective.
Though Esuna can be used to clear status ailments, it is not necessary. Instead, the best strategy is to have one character (normally Cloud or Barret) fight malboro up front while it is casting Bad Breath, while the rest either attack it from behind (normally Tifa or Cloud) or move a distance away from it to avoid it normally (Aerith). Other than this, it can be defeated using physical abilities and spells. When it opens its mouth to use Bad Breath or Chow Down, the player can cast lightning magic to pressure it, as this is guaranteed to hit. When the malboro gobbles up someone, the player should hit it with their best abilities to have it release the victim sooner.
Chakra Materia can clear poison as well as restore some health to the user. Resist can be used to protect the party from ailments, and Barrier can be used to halve damage. The player can use status-protection accessories.
Musical themes[]
This battle uses the "Crab Warden" theme which is called the same way on the Final Fantasy VII Remake Original Soundtrack.
