The "Main Theme of FINAL FANTASY IV" (ファイナルファンタジーIV メインテーマ, Fainaru Fantajī IV Mein Tēma?, lit. Final Fantasy IV Main Theme) is the main theme of Final Fantasy IV and one of its leitmotifs. It was composed by Nobuo Uematsu and rearranged by its original composer and other artists many times.

The tracks are arrangements of this track, played during emotional scenes and whenever the player travels across the Underworld respectively.

Final Fantasy IV

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)

The "Main Theme of FINAL FANTASY IV" plays as the player travels the Overworld world map; but it has also several arrangements in the soundtrack, and its theme is included in some tracks:

"Theme of Sorrow" is one of the earliest arrangements heard, and plays during mournful moments, such as the death of Anna; "Paladin", which plays when Cecil Harvey is converted into a Paladin, is a short arrangement; and "Land of Dwarves", which plays at the Underworld's world map, is another arrangement of the main theme. The "Ending Theme" includes several elements of this theme.

The above tracks were further rearranged by Junya Nakano for the soundtrack of the 3D remake. The main theme was also included in the game's opening theme, composed by Junya Nakano as well.

The main theme plays out at the beginning and in the end, and this key point is something the game's scenario writer, Takashi Tokita, feels most proud of. In the section with the Tower of Babil where everyone comes together, the developers initially wanted use the main theme, but it was decided it wouldn't give the same effect, so it was cut out from that section and kept for the ending.[1]

Spoilers end here.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years

The main theme of Final Fantasy IV and its arrangements return in the sequel. The theme itself and "Land of Dwarves" remain as background themes for the world maps of the Overworld and Underworld.

English translation
At the far reaches of darkness,
The limits where light does not reach,
Now, too, alone,
Continuing a solitary journey.
On this disintegrating star,
Hearts of steel
Informing us of this single parting--
Faster than light.
It climbs upstream in the flow of time.
A star was born
And, by and by, knew death;
And then, alone,
A hand reaches out forever.
Colder than despair
In the midst of deep darkness,
A blue planet was born
And shed its light silently.
Ah, I want to tell of this time!
Ah, I want to tell someone!
