Cloak that holds magic powers.

Description

The Magician Cloak is a mid game light armor piece in Final Fantasy IX for magic users. It teaches Insomniac, which immunizes against Sleep, and MP+10%. The Magician Cloak strengthens the wearer's Ice damage and is used for synthesis. Wearing it boosts the character's Magic stat when they level up.

Like many equipment pieces in Final Fantasy IX, the Magician Cloak is named after the Wizard Clothing from Final Fantasy Tactics.

Obtain[]

The Magician Cloak is bought for 1,850 gil from Conde Petie, Black Mage Village (before entering the Shimmering Island portal), and from the Mist Continent cities after the party returns from the Outer Continent. It is also stolen from Soulcage.

Mechanics[]

The Magician Cloak provides 15 Defense and 2 Magic Defense, mainly mitigating damage from physical attacks. The vest boosts the wearer's Ice damage by +50%, compatible with Vivi's Blizzard, Blizzara, Blizzaga, and normal attack with Ice Staff, as well as Dagger's Shiva. Wearing other Ice-boosting gear concurrently does not stack the effect.

The cloak gives a +1 bonus to the wearer's Magic when they level up with it equipped. When enough "bonuses" upon level up from gear have been accrued, the character gains a permanent stat increase. Magic is used in spells' damage calculations and for determining a character's MP growth.

Use[]

The Magician Cloak is already surpassed by the Survival Vest what it comes to physical defense if the player stole it from Beatrix. However, the Survival Vest is more physically geared as per its abilities, whereas the Magician Cloak is for mages. The boon of wearing the cloak over wearing a robe is that it does not weaken the wearer to Fire.

Insomniac and MP+10% are both good abilities to master, and the Ice boost is best for Vivi's Blizzard and Blizzara. The cloak's level up bonus is good but it is not advised to level-grind early on unless the player is stuck in a boss or a dungeon; level grinding and min-maxing are unnecessary in a normal playthrough even when preparing for superbosses. The best stat boost gear will be available in the end of the game, so for best results one would need to limit their EXP intake.

After the party returns from the Outer Continent, the Magician Cloak can be used in synthesis for making the Magician Robe.
