The Magic Shuriken is a weapon for Yuffie in Final Fantasy VII. It can be found in Wutai, and has very strong stats for when it is acquired, but only three unlinked Materia slots.

Obtained[]

The Magic Shuriken is found in Godo's house in Wutai Village.

It can be purchased for 6,000 gil from Junon, after the player has the Highwind.

Mechanics[]

As the Magic Shuriken has a base Attack stat bonus of 64, the base damage for physical attacks when the Hawkeye is equipped is in the following formula:

where "Level" is Yuffie's current level and "Strength" is her Strength stat. The Magic Shuriken also has an Attack% (Accuracy) of 110%, and no bonus to Yuffie's Magic stat. The shuriken gives a +2% boost to Yuffie's critical hit rate, and increases her Dexterity, determining her accuracy, by +10%.

The Magic Shuriken is found in Wutai Village, meaning it can be obtained once the player has the Tiny Bronco, though Wutai is an optional location and the player may not come across it if they only follow the main quest. It has stats exceeding most of Yuffie's weapons when it is first available, but its few Materia slots significantly reduces its utility. Due to its increase in accuracy and physical damage, the weapon gears Yuffie more towards physical damage. She has average stats across the board, meaning she can be viably built towards any role, and being a ranged damage dealer helps with this. Though her Limit Breaks include powerful multi-hit abilities, she also has Clear Tranquil that can give her a powerful free heal if left on level 1, potentially making up for the fewer Materia slots.

Magic Shuriken's three Materia slots are unlinked, limiting her options and preventing her from using Support Materia on a weapon. Due to this, and because the weapon gears her towards physical damage, Yuffie should instead equip Command Materia or Independent Materia to focus her towards this role, with limited Magic Materia so as not to reduce her physical stats too much.

Magic Shuriken, when it is first available, can make Yuffie a powerful physical attacker, but locks her into a role. It is overall less limiting than a similar weapon for her, the Superball, which has no Materia slots, meaning Magic Shuriken is preferable when Yuffie is being used as a physical attacker. Before this, many players may prefer to use Yuffie's Razor Ring or Hawkeye, sacrificing the stats for more slots. When more powerful and more well-rounded weapons for Yuffie become available, such as the Crystal Cross, Magic Shuriken is rendered obsolete.

Etymology[]

The weapon is called "Fuma Shuriken" in Japanese. The surname of Fūma is associated with the Fūma Clan of ninja. Fūma translates as "wind demon". Though having served since the Nanbokucho period, their exploits were most famous during the times of Sengoku under the employ of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The clan was renowned for its focus on controlled chaos and acts of sabotage, from psychologically goading opposing forces into attacking each other, to hiring pirates, thieves, brigands, and thugs for diversions involving raids on villages on enemy territory. While they formally went by the surname of Kazama, it is popularly believed they went with Fūma to befit their reputations as "demons of the wind", not unlike Fujin and Raijin, the demon gods of storms who were said to have reigned terror on men before their subduing into penance. Fūma Kotarō is the most famous of their clan, and is a title for every successor for the head of their ranks.

A shuriken is a traditional Japanese concealed weapon that was generally used for throwing, and sometimes stabbing or slashing.
