Magic Materia field model in Final Fantasy VII.

Magic Materia (魔法, Mahō?) is one of the five basic categories of Materia in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII universe. It allows the user to cast magic spells in battle, both Black and White, and also inflict status changes on enemies and teammates. It can either be cast, or in many cases, equipped to weapons to effect their element or status effect. All Magic Materia affect Strength and Magic stats, and offer slight increases or decreases on maximum HP and MP. Magic Materia is typically represented by the color green. Template:See Also

Box full of Materia.

While no Magic Materia spells are ever seen in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, some Magic Materia appears along with other Materia in a box full of them. The characters do not typically use magic in combat, instead performing their Limit Break moves.

Before Crisis -Final Fantasy VII-

Magic Materia in Before Crisis -Final Fantasy VII- works very similarly to how it works in Final Fantasy VII, although they cannot be bought in shops. Much like Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-, it divides its Magic Materia into three sub-groups.

Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-

Template:Sideicon Template:See Also In Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-, Vincent can make use of Magic Materia, but they are not performed as magic spells and there is no magic command. Instead, Vincent can equip either the Fire Materia, Blizzard, or Thunder Magic Materia to his Cerberus through gun customization. As they are very different to Magic Materia throughout the rest of the Compilation, they appear very differently and are not green.

Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-

Unlike the original Final Fantasy VII, there is no magic command, so equipped Magic Materia spells are used in battle in different ways. When equipped to Zack Fair, the Magic Materia can be used in battle along with the attack command and items in the ability menu, when selected to be used on a foe.

Etymology

Magic or sorcery is an attempt to understand, experience and influence the world using rituals, symbols, actions, gestures and language that are believed to exploit supernatural forces.

Materia means "matter" or "substance" in Latin, Spanish, and Italian; it also means "subject" in Italian and Spanish, and is the root of Portuguese "Matéria".
