Single slot. Magic Counter is a Support Materia in Final Fantasy VII. It can be linked to any Magic or Summon Materia to provide a chance to counter an attack with an ability from the linked Materia. When linked to regular Magic Materia, the ability used as a counter-attack will be the highest level ability learned on the linked Materia. Linking to Summon Materia will simply counter with the normal summon attack. Linking with Master Magic or Master Summon will counter with a random Magic or Summon, respectively. The probability to counter an attack increases with the Materia's level, starting at 30% and reaches 100% on level four.

Obtained[]

Magic Counter is a prize in chocobo racing S Class. It can be won multiple times. It can later be found in the Northern Cave. To master one, the Materia requires an enormous 300,000 AP. This means it is best to equip on weapons and armor with Double or Triple AP.

Stats[]

Level AP required Effect
1 0 30% chance of countering attacks with linked Materia.
2 20000 40% chance of countering attacks with linked Materia.
3 40000 60% chance of countering attacks with linked Materia.
4 60000 80% chance of countering attacks with linked Materia.
5 300000 100% chance of countering attacks with linked Materia.

Use[]

Magic Counter can be linked with any Magic or Summon Materia to provide a chance to counter attacks with an ability from the linked Materia. On a Magic Materia, this will be the highest-level Magic spell on the Materia, while on Master Magic or Master Summon, it will be a random Magic or Summon ability. If the linked Materia provides offensive abilities that naturally target enemies, the spell is targeted on the enemy that hit the character. Otherwise, if the Magic Materia is linked with a support ability that targets party members by default, the spell will be used on the character who has the Magic Counter equipped, or the player's group, if the ability is area-of-effect. Having a Summon Materia linked to Magic Counter while having a Master Summon equipped as well in a different slot allows infinite counterattacks with said Summon Materia as long as the character has MP.

Magic Counter can be used defensively, pairing it with healing abilities to heal the party member after they take damage. It can also be used offensively to deal damage in response, allowing spellcasters to more frequently damage enemies in battle. Magic Counter is normally more useful offensively, as there are many defensive alternatives to it.

The counter-effect can stack up to eight times on a single character. If the same character equips multiple counter-effect Materia, they will counterattack multiple times. However, both Final Attack and Sneak Attack Materia occupy the same space. It is possible to counter four times in a single counter if the linked Materia is also linked with Quadra Magic (does not work with Knights of Round).

Magic Counter should normally be used with characters with a high Magic stat: Cloud, Red XIII, Yuffie, Cait Sith, and Vincent. It can also be used very effectively on Barret, as his ultimate weapon, Missing Score, deals more damage the more AP the Materia linked to it possess, which Magic Counter can hold a substantial amount of.
