The Magic command can be changed to W-Magic with the Command Materia of same name. By linking Magic Materia with Support Materia the player can get different results when using the command, such as using a spell that is linked to an All Materia will result in the spell hitting all targets. Magic linked to an All Materia receives a 1/3rd damage penalty if more than one target is selected. Magic that hits all targets by default does not receive a damage penalty. Linking a Magic Materia with Quadra Magic has its spells cast four times in succession with half damage per casting, and linking a Magic Materia to MP Turbo boosts its spells' power in exchange for expending more MP per casting.

The abilities in the Magic skillset can be divided into four types of spell. The game allows the player to choose the order the types of spell are placed in the battle menu through the "Magic order" selection in the Config menu. The user can choose the order of restore, attack, and indirect magic, while the other is always the last section regardless.

The order is "restore attack indirect" by default.

Restoration spells that heal a certain amount of HP use the formula: (spell power * 22) + [ (level + magical attack) * 6 ] where spell power is the spell's power, level is the caster's level and magical attack is the caster's magical attack.

Restoration spells that heal a certain amount of HP use the formula:
  +
:<math>(Spell Power * 22) + [ (Level + Magical Attack) * 6 ]</math>
  +
where spell power is the spell's power, level is the caster's level and magical attack is the caster's magical attack.

e.g. A level 50 character with 150 magical attack casting Cure (spell power 5) would heal (5 * 22) + [ ( 50 + 150) * 6 ] or 1,320 HP.

e.g. A level 50 character with 150 magical attack casting Cure (spell power 5) would heal:
  +
:<math>(5 * 22) + [ ( 50 + 150) * 6 ]</math>
  +
or 1,320 HP.

Attack spells that do a flat amount of damage instead of fractional damage (e.g. Demi spells) use the formula : (Spell Power / 16) * [ (Level + Magical Attack) * 6 ] where spell power is the spell's power and level/magical attack are the caster's level and magical attack respectively.

where spell power is the spell's power and level/magical attack are the caster's level and magical attack respectively.

e.g. A level 50 character with 150 magical attack casting Fire (8 spell power) would deal:

Magic is a skillset from Final Fantasy VII accessed after equipping Magic Materia. A party member will have access to the spells inherent in the Magic Materia they have equipped, depending on the Materia's level. Some Magic Materia do not grant any Magic abilities until they are level 2.

Each Materia can have a range of spells. Many use tiered spells that give stronger magic the higher the level for a greater MP cost.

The Master Magic Materia gives the command and all of the skillset's abilities.

Mechanics

FFVII Magic

Cid casting magic.

Restoration spells that heal a certain amount of HP use the formula:

where spell power is the spell's power, level is the caster's level and magical attack is the caster's magical attack.

e.g. A level 50 character with 150 magical attack casting Cure (spell power 5) would heal:

or 1,320 HP.

Attack spells that do a flat amount of damage instead of fractional damage (e.g. Demi spells) use the formula:

where spell power is the spell's power and level/magical attack are the caster's level and magical attack respectively.

e.g. A level 50 character with 150 magical attack casting Fire (8 spell power) would deal:

or 600 damage.

Etymology

Magic or sorcery is an attempt to understand, experience and influence the world using rituals, symbols, actions, gestures and language that are believed to exploit supernatural forces.
