Description

The Mage is a Basic Job in Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, and is one of the earliest available jobs in the game, as well as the first job available to Sophia in the later parts of the game. Leveling this job is required to unlock the Black Mage, Red Mage, and White Mage jobs.

Mage is the first magic-oriented job in the game and specializes in casting limited elemental spells to exploit an enemy’s weakness, while also maintaining its MP to cast said spells with close-ranged melee attacks with the mace and shield. This job acts ain introduction to the game's magic system and break system for greater combat efficiency. In addition, provided the player has the Concentrate ability, the Mage can even recover whilst preparing for a spell. To encourage a caster playstyle, its passives include MP recovery via normal attacks, elemental magic resistance, and increased break damage via enemy weaknesses.

SOP Magic

The Mage's job action is Magic, which grants the player a limited amount of spells to cast from a spell wheel. Upon holding down R2, each spell can be charged by two tiers, doubling and or tripling its range and attack potency. This serves as an introduction to the game's spell system and enemy weaknesses to experiment with to clear break gauges more often.

The Mage obtains the Mage support ability, which sends out a blast of non-elemental energy and staggers any enemy it hits. This ability on its own is rather weak, but can be bolstered by jobs and abilities such as Seal of Blood, the Breaker's overwhelming Strength stat or the Sage's Intellect for raw damage, and the Berserker for its innate ability to stagger enemies.

Job Affinity Bonuses[]

Most weapons and items of clothing have a certain percentage of Job Affinity for a certain job. Gameplay[]

The Mage is the first magic-oriented job in the game and specializes in casting limited elemental spells to exploit an enemy’s weakness. This job acts as an introduction to the game's magic system and break system for greater combat efficiency. In addition, provided the player has the Concentrate ability, the Mage can even recover whilst preparing for a spell. This job can serve as a good means of DPS for parties early in the base game and can recover MP rather quickly.

Strengths[]

  • Can recover MP through the Concentrate passive, giving an extra resource when casting with low MP.
  • Provides the most straightforward way of exploiting weaknesses in the early game.
  • Can cure status ailments on the entire party with the Esuna spell from the Scholar General class, making for a good support job and healer in the DLC.

Weaknesses[]

  • Limited spells. The Mage being limited to only four spells leaves it at a disadvantage when paired with an enemy with weaknesses other than said spells.
  • Very unspecialized. The Mage is replaced by the White Mage, Black Mage, and Red Mage once they are unlocked for their additional spells and stats that overshadow the job's low stats.
  • Poor synergy with other jobs. The Mage cannot supplement other jobs well.

This job gives a stat bonus to Intellect, giving the character more MP recovery on normal attacks and increases magic damage dealt, but poorer defensive stats.

Recommended Subjobs[]

White Mage[]

White Mage is an excellent support job for any job for its supportive healing and buffs. White Magic is able to supplement the Mage's lack of spells. This can also aid in MP management and casting with the Haste spell and can be made even faster with the Reinforce ability.

Tyrant[]

Tyrant is a good support job for any magic job, especially those that deal in Intellect. The Tyrant's Enchantments help to add elemental attributes to your attacks for the Mage's less than stellar damage output by easily taking advantage of elemental weaknesses and gain more MP.

Monk[]

Monk probably remains the most popular support job at any level. The Monk's stats compliment Mages well and provide a moderate boost in total HP and means of quick attacks. Also, the Monk's Focus ability is useful for total damage output and damage mitigation.
