Etymology

A maelstrom is a powerful whirlpool; a large, swirling body of water.

The Japanese name may derive from a deliberate misinterpretation of the word "maelstrom", trading two pairs of adjacent letters to make the English words "meal" and "storm". Alternatively the first half may be a reading of "mael" based on how the "ae" digraph is commonly pronounced in English, as in "daemon" and "archaeology".
