Madeen.

Madeen (マディーン, Madīn?), also known as Maduin, is a recurring summon in the Final Fantasy series. It is a large bipedal winged beast whose appearance somewhat resembles a white lion. It is associated with the Holy element; though typically there is only one Holy summon in a game—Alexander—it is not summonable by the player in Final Fantasy IX where Madeen originates.

Another summon with similar name is Maduin (マディン, Madin?) from Final Fantasy VI.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy IX[]

Madeen is never referred to as a male eidolon, even after abandoning its female form, so Final Fantasy IX is the only game in which it is assumed to be female. Eiko can learn to summon Madeen for 120 AP from the Ribbon add-on, which is obtained as part of the story. Madeen's summon attack is Terra Homing (テラホーミング, Tera Hōmingu?) that deals Holy-elemental damage. Madeen's spell power increases with Eiko's level (see here for damage formulae), and costs 54 MP to summon. Summoning Madeen earns the Wolf in Mog's Clothing achievement in the mobile and Steam versions.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance[]

Madeen.

Summons Madeen to deal holy damage.

Description

The Summoner class learns Madeen from the Cheer Staff. It us the most expensive summon, taking 36 MP and needing 300 AP to master. It deals Holy-elemental damage to all targeted enemies, and has a Magic Power of 52. It is stealable through the ability Steal: Ability, and is also susceptible to Return Magic and Absorb MP.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift[]

Maduin is a Holy-elemental esper, and similar to its Final Fantasy Tactics Advance appearance, deals Holy damage to all units within a large area. The Summoner learns Madeen from using the Cheer Staff. It requires 350 AP to master and 24 MP to cast.

Crystal Defenders[]

Maduin appears not as a summon, but a boss.

Dissidia Final Fantasy (2008)[]

The description of Maduin's Fang refers to the Final Fantasy IX Madeen as Maduin, marking the first and only time he shares the same name with Maduin from Final Fantasy VI in the same Final Fantasy title.

Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia[]

Madeen is summoned for Eiko's EX Ability Terra Homing.

Madeen is a 5-star summon ability obtainable by crafting. Madeen's summon attack is Terra Homing, which deals three heavy magic light attacks to all enemies. During Madeen's initial release, she was incorrectly referred to as Maduin in event descriptions.

In addition, Madeen appears during Eiko's Guardian Mog and Sonic Homing Soul Breaks.

Magicite[]

A stronger version of Madeen also appears as a boss and an Esper as part of the magicite system. Madeen is a rank 5 holy-elemental magicite and players must first defeat Madeen (Savage) in the third holy magicite dungeon in order to obtain her.

When Madeen is summoned into battle she will cast Ultra Terra Homing, which deals ranged physical holy-elemental damage to all enemies, and temporarily lower their dark resistance level by 2. Ultra Terra Homing can break the damage cap.

Magicite effects

Madeen’s magicite provides the following effects in battle:

Madeen appears as a Shine-elemental card.

Behind the scenes[]

In Final Fantasy XII, there exists a Mystic Armor body piece called Maduin Gear, which is a mistranslation of Madeen's Robes (マディーンの衣, Madīn no Koromo?) that largely increases wearer's MP and Magick Power.

Etymology[]

The name Maduin was created at the time by Square's translator Ted Woolsey for the original Super Nintendo Entertainment System version. The name has remained consistent in all future releases of Final Fantasy VI.

Maduin's name in Japanese has no known origin. However, the summon's name can be translated as "Madin" when going off the Japanese katakana (マディン, Madin?). This has led to the summon's name often being confused with a similarly named summon, Madeen, which has the Japanese katakana of (マディーン, Madīn?).

A common fan interpretation of the Japanese name has been "Máel Dúin", based on the protagonist of Immram Maele Dúin (The Voyage of Máel Dúin), a tale of a sea voyage written in Old Irish. However, it does not match with the katakana of Máel Dúin (マイル デューン, Mairu Dyūn?) when based on the original Irish pronunciation.
