Macintosh, or simply Mac, is a line of personal computers built and sold by Apple Inc.. All Macs from 1998 to the present run a Unix-based operating system known as macOS (previously OS X). They can also be set up to run Windows via Boot Camp or by virtualization, and by extension, Windows games.

From 2006 to 2020, Macs were virtually identical in many ways to Windows machines, as they used many of the same types of internal components. What sets Macs apart from Windows machines is their design strategy, which is centered on usability. However, the nature of programming for a Mac is in some ways more complex than for a Windows unit. Macs also account for around ten percent of the computer market per industry sources, so there are fewer games overall on Macs than on Windows units.

According to a forum post dated July 2015, Square Enix programmers had significant challenges getting Final Fantasy XIV to run with acceptable performance on a Mac, leading the company to withdraw its port of the game for Macs until a third party could be brought in to refine it. That process has since been completed, but due to concerns over thermal overload, Square Enix does not recommend running the game on notebooks.

Versions of Valve's Steam and EA's Origin gaming services are also available on the Mac. However, no current library of Final Fantasy titles is available to Mac clients of either service.

Current Macs include the iMac and iMac Pro, Mac mini, Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air.
