Etymology[]

Named for Ernst Mach, the Austrian physicist who codified the speed of sound in his work on the dynamics of sound waves, Mach is an unquantifiable unit of measurement corresponding to ~330 m/s (~761 mph) in air at sea level, the speed of a given medium around an object that, should the flow of the medium break, will trigger a sonic boom. Aircraft speeds are often rated in terms of the Mach number as opposed to speeds calculated on land or sea.
