Allows you to recover MP when unleashing an attack of the linked materia's type. Works with fire, ice, lightning, wind, and poison materia.

Description

MP absorption materia is a Support Materia Support Materia in Final Fantasy VII Remake and "Episode INTERmission". It can be linked with offensive Magic Materia Magic Materia to recover MP when unleashing an attack from the linked materia. It will recover MP to the user based on a percentage of the damage they deal with the linked materia's ability.

MP absorption pairs with Fire Materia Fire Materia, Ice Materia Ice Materia, Lightning Materia Lightning Materia, Wind Materia Wind Materia, and Poison Materia Poison Materia.

Obtained[]

MP absorption materia is purchased from Chadley for 100 gil after completing the Battle Intel Report 18, which requires the player to max all 12 types of magic materia. This can be made faster with the AP Up Materia AP Up Materia and being in New Game Plus.

In INTERmission, the materia is available from the "Junk Shop" in Sector 7 Slums whose stock continually changes via quest and Fort Condor progress.

Stats[]

Level AP required Effect
1 - Absorb MP (0.1% of damage dealt)

Mechanics[]

MP Absorption recovers 0.1% of the damage dealt by the linked materia's ability as MP to the caster. The MP recovered caps at the enemy's current HP, and so the damage numbers do not always correctly reflect how much MP is recovered if the ability did more damage than the enemy had HP left. 10 MP is the most the player can gain in one casting of a spell because the damage limit is 9,999. However, if the player also has another copy of the materia linked with Magnify Materia Magnify Materia, or the caster was within Arcane Ward when using the spell, they can get more.

Use[]

MP absorption materia allows certain spells to recover MP to the user after hitting. This can be very ATB and MP-efficient, saving the user from needing to recover MP with items. It is best to match with an element that enemies either are weak to, or at least do not resist. Lightning materia in particular is effective when paired with MP Absorption, since it is guaranteed to hit, ensuring it gives MP in return. In Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, wind spells also always hit.

MP Absorption from FFVII Remake

Aerith regaining minor MP from a spell.

Given that the percentage of damage dealt that translates into MP is low, it is recommended to equip on characters with a high Magic Magic attribute. Aerith has a high Magic and her Arcane Ward allows her to cast spells twice, and can thus use MP Absorption to the point she can actually recover more MP than she used to cast the magic. Cloud can also benefit from the materia since he boasts the second-highest Magic after Aerith.

The player can equip the same materia on both MP absorption and magnify, to recover MP from the damage done to all enemies.

In hard mode, MP Absorption materia is very useful to keep the MP values up, as it is scarce.

In Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Synergy Materia Synergy Materia allows non-active characters to cast elemental spells for free when the current leader uses an offensive ability or spell (no ATB or MP consumed). This completely changes the value of synergy materia in Intergrade, making it extremely beneficial to equip at almost all times when there is more than one character in the battle party. In this version, pairing Synergy with a magic materia while another copy of that magic materia is paired to MP Absorption can restore that character's MP every time it is used.
