Lux Crystal Battles were team-based event contests that took place per fortnight in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy All-Star Carnival. At the beginning of each battle, players would choose to join one of the two available teams, with the players on each team working together to achieve victory by using the Rhythmia they collect during gameplay to take over and control crystals on a diamond-shaped grid.
Lux Crystal Battles were initially available in all regions; however, a patch added made it so that Lux Crystal Battles are no longer available in regions outside of Japan.
As of January 16, 2019, the Lux Crystal Battles have officially ended, and its unknown if an alternative of the competition will commence following its closure.
Gameplay[]
Each arcade location that owns at least one All-Star Carnival cabinet has its own local instance of the current Lux Crystal Battle. When a player signs up for a team, they must also register their home store. Players can only affect the Lux Crystal Battle that is linked with their registered store, even if they are playing on a cabinet at a different store.
Lux Crystal Battles take place on diamond-shaped grid that contains 16 crystals, each of which starts with 4,400 HP. In order to take over an opponent's crystal, players must work together to reduce the HP of that crystal to zero. Taking over a crystal restores its HP to 5,500 and it also triggers a Lux Extended Bonus that effects all of the crystals immediately adjacent to the one that was just taken over. This bonus reduces the HP of opponent's crystals by 1,300 while restoring 250 HP to crystals owned by the player's team.
During the course of a gameplay session, players will acquired Rhythmia by traveling and defeating monsters. Players can use this acquired Rhythmia in two different ways: They can either attack an opponent's crystal or heal a crystal that is already controlled by their team. When used for attack, Rhythmia is converted into damage at a one-to-one ratio. This means that 800 points of Rhythmia will cause 800 points of damage. When used for healing, the HP restored to a crystal is equal to 20% of the Rhythmia used by the player. So if the player uses 800 points of Rhythmia to heal a crystal, they will restore 160 HP.
Everyday, one crystal is randomly selected to become a bonus crystal. The effects of any Rhythmia that is used on this bonus crystal is doubled. In addition to this, whenever a player spends Rhythmia at their registered home store, its effectiveness is doubled. All of the Rhythmia earned during a single gameplay session can only be applied to a single crystal. Players cannot split their Rhythmia between different crystals within in a single gameplay session. Players also cannot save Rhythmia between gameplay sessions.
At the end of the Lux Crystal Battle, the team that controls the most crystals at their home store wins, and each member of the winning team receives the local victory reward. The worldwide winner is determined by tallying every local instance of the Lux Crystal Battle across the world. Each member of the globally victorious team receives the worldwide victory reward, regardless of the status of their local battle.
After the Lux Crystal Battle is over, any characters, songs, and/or Moogle costumes that were given out as prizes during the battle become available in their respective shops. This means that members of the losing team, as well as players who were not able to participate in the Lux Crystal Battle, can still unlock these rewards by paying the appropriate amount of sound medals, crystal shards, or Gil.

Behind the scenes[]
As of the final Lux crystal battle, the Groove Crystal (the blue team) has won the most battles against the Beat Crystal (the red team) by a narrow margin of 28 out of 54 battles. At three wins each, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy X are the games with the most Lux crystal battle victories that involved either a character, location, airship, faction, or a mini-game. In contrast, Final Fantasy VI is the game with the most losses; winning one but losing three more battles for the remainder of the competition.

Etymology[]
Lux is the SI unit of illuminance and luminous emittance, measuring luminous flux per unit area. It is also the Latin word for "light".
