Causes Berserk to all targets.

Description

Luna is a Dragon ability in Final Fantasy IX used by Freya that gives Berserk to all allies and enemies for a cost of 12 MP, making them all only use physical attacks at increased strength.

Obtained[]

Luna is learned for 30 AP from the Trident, bought from Desert Palace or Oeilvert Mogshops. As these locations eventually become inaccessible, Luna is missable.

Mechanics[]

Luna gives Berserk to all units in battle, allies and enemies alike, unless the enemy is immune. For player characters, there is no support ability to immunize against Berserk. The affected's attack is boosted by 50% and they are forced to use their default Attack on a random member of the opposing party. Berserk is removed by Gysahl Greens, but as the entire party is affected, they will be unable to use Gysahl Greens to remove the status unless someone is KO'd and revived via Auto-Life.

Use[]

Luna is a niche ability, as though it improves the party's attacking prowess, it takes away all player agency from there on out until the end of battle. Using it is thus risky, as the player will be unable to heal, and the enemies, likewise, deal augmented physical hits toward the party. Using Luna with Auto-Regen and/or Auto-Life mitigates the risk. Using Luna is much faster than the Berserk spell, which has a chance of missing as well.

The player should only use Luna if they want the increased attacking prowess from the party. To hinder enemies, other statuses are preferable, like Sleep from Quina's Night.

Etymology[]

Luna means "moon" in Latin, Italian, Romanian, Russian, and Spanish. The term lunar effect refers to the belief that there is a correlation between specific stages of the Earth's lunar cycle and behavior in animals, including humans, which cannot simply be explained by variation in light levels. Claims of a lunar connection have appeared in many contexts. According to one such claim, people with mental disorders exhibit episodes of increased violence or aggressiveness during a full moon.
