Viscount Ludovich Baert, also known as Bart Rudvich, is the head of the multifaceted Baert Trading Company in Final Fantasy Tactics.

A man of wealth and prestige hiding as the leader of a criminal organization, his company is a cover for all sorts of nefarious activities, involved in opium smuggling, human-trafficking, organized crime, and murder.

He uses the unique job viscount (bi-count in the PS1 version).

History[]

Baert was hired by Cardinal Delacroix to retrieve the Taurus auracite from Besrudio Bunansa. His men captured Besrudio whose son, Mustadio, escaped with the Stone and was rescued by Ramza Beoulve. Ramza and Mustadio later returned to the Bunansas' hometown of the Clockwork City of Goug where Baert captured Mustadio and confronted Ramza.

Baert threatened to have Besrudio killed if Mustadio refused to divulge the Stone's location. Mustadio told Baert it was in the chimney where Ramza was standing. Ramza retrieved a shiny stone and gave it to Baert. Baert left, instructing his thugs to attack Ramza and Mustadio. He took the Stone to Delacroix only to discover it was a fake.

An impatient Delacroix hired Goffard Gaffgarion to deal with Ramza and Mustadio. As Gaffgarion left the room, Delacroix told Baert that he must take responsibility for his failure and killed him.

Etymology[]

Ludovich is German for "famous warrior" or "illustrious in battle". It derives from the Old Germanic name Hludwig (or Ludwig), composed of the elements Hlud (or hlot), meaning "fame", "glory", or "illustrious", and Wig, meaning "war" or "battle". The literal interpretation of the name is "glorious warrior", which contrasts with the character's personality.

The surname Baert (or Bart) has Flemish origins (Belgium/Netherlands), being a variation of Germanic names such as "Bart" (son of Baert) or derived from the Old Dutch baard (beard), possibly indicating a barber or someone with a beard. Like other similar names (Bert, Barth), it may be linked to beraht, meaning "bright" or "illustrious", but the "beard" root is a strong interpretation for this specific surname.

The Baert's surname in the PlayStation One version is "Rudvich". Although there is no direct and universally recognized meaning, it appears to have Germanic-Slavic origins. The prefix hrod (or rud) in German means "fame" or "glory", while the suffix -vich means "son of" or "descendant of" in Slavic. Therefore, a likely meaning for Rudvich would be "son of [someone with the name] famous" or "descendant of the famous one".
