Deal physical damage by luck.

Description

Lucky Seven is a Skill in Final Fantasy IX used by Zidane to deal fixed damage to one enemy; if Zidane's HP at the time of using the ability ends in 7, the skill randomly inflicts 7, 77, 777, or 7777 damage to a single enemy. If Zidane's HP does not end in 7, Lucky 7 inflicts 1 damage to the enemy.

Obtained[]

Lucky Seven is learned for 85 AP from Gladius (steal from Lani and buy from shops after), Exploda (synthesize in Lindblum and other towns and find in Madain Sari), Rune Tooth (synthesize in Black Mage Village and other towns), The Tower (find in the final dungeon), and Thief Hat (buy in Black Mage Village in the endgame).

Mechanics[]

Lucky Seven deals fixed damage to one target based on the last digit of Zidane's HP at the time of using the skill: if the digit is 7, Lucky Seven randomly inflicts 7, 77, 777, or 7777 damage. Otherwise, Lucky Seven inflicts 1 damage to the target.

When Zidane has Lucky Seven available, he can use Solution 9 while in Trance.

Trying out Zidane's Lucky Seven in FINAL FANTASY IX Remastered

Lucky Seven is generally not useful apart from enabling Solution 9 for Trance, as it is so random. 7777 damage is the only good outcome, and for it to happen, Zidane needs to have precise HP and still there is only a 25% chance he will do 7777 damage over 7, 77, or 777. This means that over time, using Lucky Seven repeatedly, he will likely have done more damage had he used his turns for attacking physically, especially if with killer abilities or MP Attack equipped.

Auto-Regen is one of the best support abilities in the endgame, every party member likely equipping it once they learn it. This eliminates the need for any other healing most of the time, but also makes Lucky Seven unusable unless Zidane's maximum HP ends with a 7. There is still the chance that Zidane sustains damage before managing to pull off his attack, as abilities tend to queue up in Final Fantasy IX due to animation lengths and only one unit being able to act at any one time.

For fixed damage, Zidane should use his superior Thievery, or Quina can use Limit Glove or Frog Drop. Though Limit Glove has a similarly strict HP limitation, getting Quina to 1 HP is easier than to getting Zidane's last HP digit deliberately to 7, as they can be revived from KO to 1 HP. Deliberately maneuvering Zidane's HP to end in 7 would be tricky without him using Lucky Seven on himself, using up his turn. Rather than aiming for it, the player could wait for it to happen naturally on his turn, then gamble his turn hoping for the 7777 outcome. Otherwise, when Zidane's HP ends in 8 or 9, he can use Lucky Seven on himself to deal 1 HP damage.

Etymology and symbolism[]

Lucky Seven is an allusion to All Lucky 7s from Final Fantasy VII. It is named "Lucky Seven" because seven is seen as a lucky number.
