Origin[]
Lady Luck is a popular and somewhat memetic personification of luck as a lovely and bountiful woman among gamblers. Though while she is popularly regarded with good fortune, is sometimes also regarded with bad luck upon one pushing their risks and stakes too far. Lady Luck is believed to originate from the Greek and Roman goddesses Tyche and Fortuna, whose images were lavishly displayed on articles of luxury like coins, jewelry, and vanities in dedicated shrines and spread with the Macedonian Empire. Her current incarnation is believed to have evolved from gambler folklore from European gambling dens and casinos.
Being depicted as a catgirl in Final Fantasy VII may be inspired by the maneki-neko, a mythical cat believed to bring good fortune and is the incarnation of various goddesses of luck and mercy in East Asia. It is also documented that cats will sometimes snatch and bring home shiny objects, in some cases money. Lucky Girl being a catgirl may also be because Cait Sith is a cat.
