A protagonist is the character which in a form of literature, the narrative is focused on. In the Final Fantasy series, every one of its game, movie, and animation installments has a main character from whose point of view the story is told.

Firion - An orphan from Fynn who becomes the core of the Wild Rose Rebel Army.

Cecil Harvey - A noble and fair Dark Knight from the kingdom of Baron, and the leader of its world renowned elite airship force, the Red Wings.

Bartz Klauser - A young man who travels the world with his companion and steed, Boco.

Final Fantasy VI[]

Though there is no set main protagonist, Terra Branford is the representative for most spin-offs, also appearing in the logo and her theme being the main theme, and is often considered the main protagonist for the first part of the game. Celes Chere is similarly often considered the main protagonist in the second half, as the World of Ruin scenario begins with only her in the party. Both women were once subjects of the Gestahlian Empire's experiments in the field of Magitek who come to stand on their own and venture out to see the world beyond their captive holdings.

Cloud Strife - An Ex-SOLDIER mercenary who is hired by the rebellious environmental activist group AVALANCHE.

Final Fantasy VIII[]

Squall Leonhart - A student of the military schools known as Garden, destined to become a Legendary SeeD.

Final Fantasy IX[]

Zidane Tribal - An easygoing thief of the doubling Tantalus theater troupe, who is hired to kidnap Princess Garnet of Alexandria.

Final Fantasy X[]

Tidus - A professional blitzball player from the city of Zanarkand who ends up in the world beyond its limits, into Spira.

Final Fantasy XI[]

Due to this being a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, there is no universal main character. Each player experiences the game as a protagonist of their own story as one of the Five Races in the realm of Vana'diel, being an adventurer who journeys far and wide in a world governed by crystals and made by gods that now sleep.

Shantotto is used as the representative in spin-offs.

Final Fantasy XII[]

Vaan - A street urchin from Rabanastre, who despises the Archadian Empire for its cruelty and tyranny, and wishes to be a free-flying sky pirate.

Final Fantasy XIII[]

Lightning - A tough-willed young woman who ranks as a Guardian Corps Sergeant, in the world of Cocoon. Branded with the abhorred and feared mark of the l'Cie, she embarks on a quest to save her sister from the same fate.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

Due to this being a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, there is no universal main character. Each player experiences the game as a protagonist of their own story as one of the Eight Races in the Source, being an adventurer of the lands known as Eorzea.

Y'shtola is used as representative in most spin-off games.

Noctis Lucis Caelum - A well-to-do but withdrawn prince, and heir to the throne of Lucis, armed with great magical powers against forces out to conquer his kingdom and the world's Crystal.

Gladiolus Amicitia is the main character of the DLC episode "Final Fantasy XV: Episode Gladiolus."

Prompto Argentum is the main character of the DLC episode "Final Fantasy XV: Episode Prompto."

Ignis Scientia is the main character of the DLC episode "Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ignis."

Ardyn Izunia is the main character of the DLC episode "Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ardyn."

In "Final Fantasy XV: Comrades," the player creates their own avatar.

Class Zero - A remarkable group of Agito Cadets from the magical academy of Akademeia. Due to the player being able to chose their main character as either a male or female human, male or female mutant, or one of three monsters, there is no universal main character.
